Both are in use but as far as I've been able to find out - and I've done some
research on this one - "cannot" is generally seen as being a little more
correct. It's frequently �(together with "can't"), the only form that's in the
dictionaries. 

Though here it should be: cannot be explained

Actually, I've seen it both ways in print. 
Sometimes, I write 'by ear'.  That is, I write to the language in a 
manner that reflects speech patterns. 
This often results in strange spellings.  Of course, sometimes I fall 
into bad habits, as well.  You both have
caught one of those bad habits. 
I'll consider the change because it won't hurt the story and probably 
will cause fewer 'huh?' reactions when
reading it.
