I feel really sorry for our brothers and sisters in Harry Potter
fanfiction. There are screen captures of page 606 out now of "Half-Blood
Prince," where Ms. Rowling proceeds to render virtually every single
post-OOTP/post-graduation fanfic out of continuity.

That's an occupational hazard of writing fanfiction against a series
that hasn't been completed yet. At any moment, the author can turn your
continuation into an AU with the stroke of a pen.

Having read the entire book, and listened just a bit to the whining, I just
have to say I don't get it when the fans complain about the author making
"clich" choices in the book. I mean, they're only "clich" because everyone
saw them coming and wrote a fanfic about it - and JKR does *not* read
fanfic, since that would be very stupid for many, many reasons.

I think she did a good job on this book - she confirmed some long-standing
suspicions, threw us several curve-balls, opened up a few new cans of worms,
and shed some light on the past. She also pulled some new stylistic tricks
on us which were a welcome addition, and introduced some new characters. All
in all, just like the last five books...

It also gives me occasion to point a finger and laugh really really hard at
a whole category of fic-writers, who are going to have a very hard time
writing new stories in their particular absurd genres after events in this
book - neener, neener, neener, I say. You know who you are....

There, a nice, AFAICT spoiler-free editorial of the new book...
