I'm also interested in why so many people rate RAALS as high as they
do. You are
certainly not alone in rating this story highly, but for the life of
me I don't see why.
It seems to me more flashy narrative technique than actual
high-quality story.
%And some people really go for 'style over substance.' I do from time to
time as well, but definitely not for RAALS. I was turned off from the
opening and grew increasingly bored with what was written. This alt-uni
version of Ranma came off as too smart for his own good, the R+A
dynamics went too smoothly, the plot bland, and by the time those
painfully god-awful singing scenes came up... well, I addressed that in
a fic of mine, which pretty much said it all. The grammar itself was
solid, and there was some good descriptive imagery here and there, but
overall the furor over it astounds me. But then, I say the same thing
about FLCL, so take that for what you will.
Ranma and Akane: A Love Story:
I feel that this is one of "The Best Fics of All Time" because it has
some incredible writing with amazing potential for great story. Keep in
mind that this fic is so massively incomplete you may as well only have
read Chapter One. Close examination of the hosting website shows that
RAALS is actually only volume one of a four part saga, and "volume one"
is so incredibly incomplete
% Wait. It almost seemes like you're saying part of what makes it great isn't even written yet. It seems kind of odd evaluating part of it on the basis of what isn't there as determining how good the fic is.
that those who do get hooked on the story
feel the end of what _has_ been written like a knife to the kidney.
Also, I suppose that whether or not you like RAALS is rather akin to
learning in different ways. Some people learn best by hearing material,
some people just seem to *know* the material, some have to actually get
in and get their hands dirty. You may simply not visualize the written
word the way I do. If I could somehow translate what goes on in my head
into cinema (or virtual reality, or whatever it is you best
conceptualize stories as) you'd probably be hooked, too.
% And if you could translate what goes on in my head, you'd probably
become unhooked just as fast. It seems like what you're trying to say
is, 'if your tastes mirrored my own, you'd have the same tastes I do',
which is, well, pointless. Whether or not people like RAALS is akin to
this: it's a matter of personal preference and taste. It's simple,
really. Don't try to make the explanation long-winded and complex.
Simple is better.
% Anyway, I'm back from my vacation and hope to have something posted in a few days. Ciao, all.
