As an EE I couldn't let this pass.

"Skuld" would want you to know this and correct it otherwise the so 
called goddess of the future might hunt you up and do a revenge fic. 


If I was caught out in an electrical storm and had the choice of a  
plastic garbage can and a metal garbage.

I'd jump in the metal garbage can and turn it on it's side.

The plastic can offers no protection from even a near miss and the 
metal one would allow you to survive a direct hit.

The safest place to be in an electrical storm is in a metal vehicle 
with a metal roof, sides and bottom.  

It's the metal surrounding you that directs the lightning strike 
around you and to ground.

The  insulation of the rubber tire or plastic can is meaningless to 
something that has just punched a hole through several miles of air, 
which is normally non-conductive.

If your caught out in the open during an electrical storm and can't 
get to a building or metal vehicle and feel your hair start to stand 
on end then  your left with hunkering  down into the tightest ball 
your body can form with your feet placed as close together as 
possible.

(this is a simplified and incomplete explanation)
A shell made of non-conductive materials allows a large voltage to 
build up in the material surface and the inside and outside of the 
insulating shell.  This large voltage causes large currents to flow 
inside the non-conductive shell as well as on the shell's surface.

A conductive material such as a metal shell does not  allow a large 
voltage to build up on the metal shells surface and the current flows 
only on the surface of the metal never passing through the person 
inside.
