There are a few non bicyle vehicles that show up in other series. Most
notably smaller stuff such as the demons Vespa in UY, or similar small
vespa'ish delivery trucks. On the larger side of things Ranma 1/2 also
features at least one ussage of Japanese passenger trains, during the Herb
story arc.

Didn't tux-boy have a car and motorcycle he drove once or twice in
Sailor Moon? Then there's the race car in AMG, the van Tenchi&family
took to the hot springs. I know...there's another of those German
Jeep-like things in Kokoro's Library...amphibious too...

Aside from the fact that the manga we've talked about so far are all by
Rumiko Takahashi...

But in truth, it really boils down to the fact that other than
transforming robot-cars and battlesuit motorcycles basic transport is
almost unheard of in anime... There are more schoolgirls riding flying
bicycles than moms with Honda hatchbacks...

...I really gotta ask what you're smoking. In most anime where cars and
other transportation is suitable to the setting, they *are* present.
Characters take the train or bus, etc. Most anime characters don't own
cars, but that's mostly because they're underage.

You know there seems to be a lack of "moms" too... Just about every
anime character is missing a parent or two for one reason or another,
sometimes they're dead, sometimes lost, sometimes just off doing
adventurous things in China, and sending back magical artifacts
containing strange goddesses...

This, on the other hand, is something I've noticed too - it's not
universal, but there are a huge number of stories where the mothers are
missing. Excepting Ranma and Ryoga, the other characters of that series
are all missing their moms. In Evangelion, *everyone* we meet is missing
a mother - we're more or less flat-out told this in series. Of the anime
I've seen recently, Noir, Madlax, Fafner (brrr), Bleach, Gunslinger
Girls (also brrr), and Poirot and Marple (heh) all lack mothers among
the underage main and supporting characters - in the cases where the
moms are still alive (Gunslinger Girls and Bleach), the kids were
abandoned, more or less. Naruto gets an honorary mention, as does
Escaflowne (both Sakura and Hitomi still have their mothers, but they
get zero screen time). I haven't gotten far enough to tell with
Kannaduki no Miko, DearS or Mai Hime to tell if the trend continues
there.
