I haven't been following this discussion, but the name Takahashi caught
my eye. In Maison Ikkoku, which is one of her creations, there are cars. Not
used that often, but there are scenes where the characters are being driven,
especially that one girl who is engaged to the tennis instructor; she'll be
driven near Maison Ikkoku, with her dogs, and you see her getting in and our
of the vehicle, and interacting with her chauffeur. There are also
trains/subways, one particular scene with the main charater and an
ambulance, and a few with the female lead and a bus.

    Maison Ikkoku is surprisingly "normal" compared to her other works like
Inuyasha and Ramna 1/2. I've read that she based it off experiences she
herself had as a young woman living in a boarding house.

Nothing else -- at least from Earth -- in all the rest of that series.
Nothing in Ranma 1/2.  Can't think that I saw any such in Inu-Yasha, and

not very familiar with her other works, so I couldn't say if there are

I'll be the first to agree that spaceships, hoverbikes, and roof-hopping

are

far better than sitting in a six-lane parking lot in the middle of rush
hour, but it *does* seem to be a very curious bias on her part.

There's Shampoo's bicycle. I dunno that you'd call it normal since it
zooms through the air, but I think that has more to do with Shampoo than
the bike.
(Also makes me wonder, which came first, Ranma 1/2 or Cat-Girl Nuku
Nuku? Just guessing Ranma, but wonder if the bicycle gags are
derivative...?)
