For Ataru Moroboshi, the afterlife was Hell.  Not just
"a living hell", or "like hell".  He had slowly
convinced himself that those foreign preachers yapping
about damnation were right after all, and he was now
among the Condemned.

How else to explain what happened to so many other
main characters?  Trunks got to hang out with a
different beautiful, smart, athletic, and otherwordly
powerful girl who was completely in love with him
almost every day.  And it was not even restricted to
anime characters - he had met this starship captain
from a show that was not even animated, whose harem
counted more people than Ataru knew, and most of them
were women worth dying just to grope once.  Many of
his crew apparently had similar, if lesser, devoted
groupies.  Even his female communication officer had
her own love slaves.

As if to add insult to insult, some of his fellows did
not even wait until the afterlife to gather their
lovers.  He still had to choke down bile of jealousy
every time he so much as thought of Tenchi, and the
intricate web of Ranma, his fiancees, their fiancees,
and the fiancees' fiancees' fiancees had given him
recurring nightmares.

By contrast, all he had was Lum.  One woman.  One true
love, or so everyone said.  Maybe they were right
about that part of it.

The worst part of it was, they kept saying they envied
him his simple love life.  And they all said it with a
straight face, as if it was not the most sarcastic
comment ever, designed and repeated explicitly to keep
him in his place.

There was only one thing he did not understand.  Hell
was a place for the dead, and his series had ended,
so surely that described him.  Yet everyone else
claimed he was still alive - in fans' hearts, just
like the rest of them.
