You snipped what, in my opinion, is the key part of Taper's message:

a redeeming ending that mocks what she cares most deeply about.

"1984" had a depressing ending that was *depicted* as a depressing 
ending. A better comparison, ironically, would be a hypothetical Ideal 
Communist Citizen reading 1984, and being horrified at how the eventual 
rectification of Winston Smith was depicted as a bad thing.

I'm trying to come up with an approximation of what sort of novel 
_would_ cause me to feel the same way as Yomiko Readman did here, but to 
be honest I can't think of much that doesn't start sounding very similar 
to Fahrenheit 451 itself. Maybe a novel-length Jack Chick tract.
