For the purposes of this story, I wanted it to be completely unclear what
really happened that day.  The idea boils down to this--that they both 
hate for the exact same reason, but only one of them is right. ^___^

Or none of them. I still suspect Orochimaru had something to do with the
Uchiha massacre. The canon version might turn out to be some form of failed
brainwashing or something, or a deliberate setup to get an Uchiha to come to
*him* - that'd be about four years of planning. Going with the idea above,
it might be a matter of direct action instead, for the same result -
possibly to get two chances at the same goal. Although it's unlikely that
Sasuke would still be alive if Itachi blamed him for the massacre.
