I'll take the liberty of replying to both in the same message.

Second: It is my understanding that many Japanese creators view
the creation of fanworks (doujin, cosplay costumes, etc.) as a sign
of honor; these works are symbols of the fans fondness for the
Creators work.
This seems to pop up from time to time, and almost always under
similar circumstances. Am I the only one who would like to see an
actual quote/article/interview/link where said view is expressed, and
possibly a list of who expresses it?

Check out the translations of the Sailor Moon manga available here in
the
US. There are numerous little notes in the margins and at the ends of
chapters by Takeuchi, and in several she goes on at length about how
much
she enjoys all the Sailor Moon fanfiction that she's seen (or even been
sent).
My Sailor Moon manga is incomplete and far away, but I can only recall one
time.
I guess I should be more specific in what I asked for - one creator stating
her
enjoyment of the fanfics she has read is no evidence of the general attitude
towards fanworks. What I was hoping for is more than "X says he
enjoys/doesn't
mind fanfics based on his works."* or "They sell thousands of doujinshi - if
it
the creators/owners/publishers/etc. disapproved, they would take action
against it."

*Incidentally, X is not necessarily Japanese. I've seen claims that, for
example,
Terry Pratchett is fanfic-tolerant. Should we base our view on what
British creators allow their fans to do on him, J. K. Rowling or someone
else?

ditto Kenichi Sonoda's first "work" and what got him recognized by manga
companies were his parody doujinshi.
The industry going out of it's way to encourage this sort of thing is the
plot of Leaf's Comic Party.
I mean an anime about doujinshi making?
tell me they aren't useing it to raise a new crop of creative staff.
"Fan turns pro, based on his fanworks" is not the same as "Professionals
approve of/like fanworks"*. Nor is, strictly speaking, "Professionals create
uncritical/approving/supportive work about fans and fanworks".
(Besides, I've been lead to believe that "You have to stand a little parody"
is one of the basic, if unwritten, tenets of copyright law, regardless of
country.)

*Or even necessarily "Fan turned professional approves of/likes fanworks".

Of course I consider Leaf's method of multi (heh hehe I said Multi)
multiple versions of the same work goes far to spreading it's
popuularity...
I mean look at To Heart.
    An H game
    A non h game
     Manga.
     Anime
and novels on the same series...
And how much of the above was created independently and without
the approval of the owners?
