doesn't *see* any fanworks.
 One of his (and I think it's justifyable) concerns is he himself does not
want to be in any way motivated (either in a positive or negative way) in
his own creations by viewing the works of others.

ditto Kenichi Sonoda's first "work" and what got him recognized by manga
companies were his parody doujinshi.
 The industry going out of it's way to encourage this sort of thing is the
plot of Leaf's Comic Party.
 I mean an anime about doujinshi making?
 tell me they aren't useing it to raise a new crop of creative staff.

"Fan turns pro, based on his fanworks" is not the same as "Professionals
approve of/like fanworks"*. Nor is, strictly speaking, "Professionals create
uncritical/approving/supportive work about fans and fanworks".
(Besides, I've been lead to believe that "You have to stand a little parody"
is one of the basic, if unwritten, tenets of copyright law, regardless of
country.)

Not really.
 The Mouse (tm) is pretty hash when dealing with parody.
 ditto Lucasfilm and the Star Wars title.
and I know that Warner sends out "desist" orders to H artists who "parody"
their works.
 The folks who hold trademark on "Conan" clench it so tightly in their
little spincters that "Boy Detective Conan" becomes "Case Closed" *despite
the name Conan was around long before "the barbarian" and even refers to
an actual person.

 (of curse you could also site the "Lupan" "Rupan" debacle as well.

 Of course I consider Leaf's method of multi (heh hehe I said Multi)
multiple versions of the same work goes far to spreading it's
popuularity...
 I mean look at To Heart.
    An H game
    A non h game
     Manga.
     Anime
     and novels on the same series...

And how much of the above was created independently and without
the approval of the owners?

 Yes,  These were all done by the company ... in a brilliant "shotgun"
approach to hit just about every part of the market...and you will also
see self parody in these - as you will of EVA by Gainax.

Hell, you don't even need to go outside the "shop" to see EVA hentai, I
mean have you seen the Mah-Jonng game...
 but then I think that in a hyper inflated way you will see the levels of
tollerence in Japanese (vrs North Americian) creators in "Otaku no Video"

 No company in it's right mind would say "feel free to use our characters
and situations so that we lose rights to them" but you don't need to say
this if you turn a blind eye to things.
 This way, if things do get out of hand (although, again I don't know
what's more out of hand than Comic Market.
