I imagine the Admins will step in any minute now...
My Sailor Moon manga is incomplete and far away, but I can only recall
one
time.
I guess I should be more specific in what I asked for - one creator
stating
her
enjoyment of the fanfics she has read is no evidence of the general
attitude
towards fanworks. What I was hoping for is more than "X says he
enjoys/doesn't
mind fanfics based on his works."* or "They sell thousands of doujinshi
-
if
it
the creators/owners/publishers/etc. disapproved, they would take action
against it."
Okay, you want an example of "X says he enjoys/doesn't mind fanfics based
on his works"?
No, I already got some of those. I said I wanted something _more_ than "X
says...".
The fact that you, a published author, approves of fanfiction based on/in
your first book, does not show that the American publishing industry or
many American authors does the same.
I want/hope for something along the lines of "Doujinshi are officially
condoned
and approved of in Japan, not just by individual creators but by the major
publishers and animation studios as well - here, for example, is a link
where
Publisher Y says so and explains why. It is not just a matter of going after
doujinshi in general being a legal impossibility (as not all of them are
copyright
infringements*) and going after individuals or 'all doujinshi based on X's
work
or series Z' is going to cost more than is gained from doing so.**"
In short, some actual evidence that Japan is the Promised Land of fandom,
rather than just another country where the big guys usually have other
things on their minds than going after fanfic-writers.
*Even ignoring the finer points of copyright here, I've been lead to believe
that a doujinshi does not actually have to be based on another work.
**Not in terms of bad publicity among hardcore fans, but as in "bringing
the whole thing to court will cost more money than any sane court would
award you for the infringement, provided they find there is one".
