Yes, this is where we get into authenticity problems, and it goes with any
genre. Just about any movie with police in it violates procedures in nearly
every scene, and there are never any consquences. Legal shows as well (if
only trials were like Perry Mason instead of what they're really like).

On the other hand, the gung ho attitude is oftentimes part of the charm of
fiction. Our lives are often dictated by silly rules, and it's liberating to
see the hero just go out there and do something without having to be 'by the
book.' Likewise with bad guys, it can be use to highlight just how bad they
are. Likewise procedures tend to be long, tedious, and boring. Taking
creative liscense, like in the case of TR Edwards in either the original
source material or your fic, is fine as long as you can keep it from going
over the top.
