That's in real life. In anime, I can name any number of shows
where central or supporting cast blow off military discipline regularly,
and not only get away with it, they often are rewarded. Galaxy Railways
comes to mind as one story I'm collecting where that happens on a
routine basis. Another that comes to mind is Macross... -any- of the
series. Gundam is another series rife with soldiers who hare off on
their own with very expensive pieces of equipment at will.
As a former soldier, it raises my hackles too; but in anime,
outright insubordination is -genre-.

I originally had a plot laid out that followed the original
sequence of
events in Macek's outline and the novilization by Brian Daley
and James
Luceno (AKA Jack McKinney) in respect to T.R. Edwards (to a point).
Upon consultation with a couple experts in military fields
that I have
learned to trust, I discovered that there is no way in hell
that Edwards
could weasel out of getting spaced, with or without a court martial.
I do apologize, and for only the second time in my time writing
fanfics, I will have to make a couple major revisions to this
chapter.
The revision will be posted on my website during the next
update, with
the relevant link included when I post chapter 24 (which is
in progress).
As one of my favorite sci-fi characters is famous for saying, "Oops."

I like your story so far, though I have one comment. A commander
-cannot- tolerate insubordination on any level, Especially
from an XO
class officer, Tenchi by rights should be spacing edwards
out of hand
for what he has done...
