Unobserved, an elderly man shorter than either
teenager eavesdropped on their conversation. He
could
have sworn kids, especially girls, were not so
open
about the topic; to discover otherwise sent joy
tingling down his spine.

Is that really the part that was tingling?

The tingle passed through his spine. Where it wound
up, well...

For a moment, he lost track of who was defending
which
position, but it mattered not. In his opinion,
the
discussion itself helped ensure Japan remained the
best country to live in, as reflected in his own
frequent measurements of one particular statistic.
Not that he often read foreign works unless in
foreign
countries.

This last paragraph wandered away into
incomprehensibility, it seems
to me. Was the foreign works a directed comment in
particular? I think
it'd work better if you just drop the last sentence.

I was trying to tie it into the comment that spawned
it. But on review, I think you're right; this one
did not work too well.
