A trained imagination.  (And practiced: I take jobs
that require me to figure out things nobody's figured
out yet, and I write fiction every so often.  But it
was trained first.)  Like writing skills, it's
something that can be acquired if one does not already
have it.  (Maybe someday I should start trying to
write down how one trains an imagination...)
