I didn't say there was.  What I tried to say was that to the careless
reader it might look that way.  Knowing how you write, after reading
so much of your stuff, and knowing how *I* write, I can only assume
that it's a set-up for a later payoff -- probably more than one.
Which you have confirmed in the next sentence.  That's all I need to
know -- and I didn't even need to know that.  Unlike some readers, I
don't need to have my hand held through the confusing or dark bits of
a plot.  <grin>

<chuckle>  I'm just waiting to see what Ranma does when the Emperor
tells him the Tendo "situation" has been "handled".  And when he
finds out exactly how it was "handled"...

And I can't help but wonder if Kuno's delusion is so strong that he
might denounce the Emperor as an imposter if the latter personally
ordered him to stand down from pursuing Ranma...
