his work without giving backup or reason to it - his "being an ass", as

Agreed. Like Nick, I've seen portions of the future of the fic.
Like some of the others, I'm not happy with the direction it's going,
though not for the same reasons. For my complaint, it's simply a
matter of the changes coming too fast for me to handle. I'm getting
old, I suppose.
However, without risking spoilage, I'd like to point one thing
out.
Riding to someone else's rescue, even Ranma's, can occasionally
be seen as a mere attempt to paint yourself as a hero.
Riding to your OWN rescue, in an attempt to save your own life,
is merely common SENSE. And if in saving your OWN ass, you happen to
incidentally save someone else's, like, say, Ranma, well, that's just
a nice side-bonus.
Mark's already shown everyone who Ranma is, and who he's related to
on his mother's side. Those facts don't - indeed, can't! - be considered
spoilers. So, go back to the previously published chapters, check out that
family's inter-relations, the family INTERACTIONS, who hates who, who likes
who, and most important of all, who OWNS what in Japan, then draw your own
conclusions.
