Foreword: This is the result of lack of sleep, browsing 4chan, and
watching the faux op for the "Troubled Windows" anime a couple of times.
If you're not familiar yet with the phenomenon of OS Girls, you're
missing out... they're adorable. A wide range of artists have done their
takes on human-type versions of many OSes, with Windows ME being a clear
favorite... many seem to agree that, while it may be the lousiest OS,
she makes for the cutest girl. (I prefer the 2K girl, myself.) A lot of
art has been done of these girls... often cute, often sexy, and
sometimes sad or touching.
So, here's my little stab at bringing them into fanfic. Forgive it
somewhat if it's lackluster in quality... the spirit was willing, the
body and brain were very tired.
To familiarize yourself more with the OS girls, I suggest checking out
the archive of imagery done of them at
http://nijiura-os.hp.infoseek.co.jp/ (Please note, page is in Japanese,
and the images are not ALL guaranteed to be work safe.)

Parking and C:\Driving

Micro$oft-hausu was fairly quiet early in the morning. Outside, birds
were chirping, and the cicadas were starting to trill with the promise
of it being a calm, hot day.
In one upstairs bedroom, a cute young girl with green hair lay in bed,
snoring quietly. After several minutes, the snoring stopped, and her
eyes peeked open slightly. Several minutes later, she sat up, very
slowly, her hair falling down her back, swaying over the white triangle
with an exclamation point inside it emblazoned on the back of her blue
pajamas.
Almost an hour later, the girl had done her hair up in a pair of
braids, a blue dress with white and red ribbons at the chest and back of
the waist, the ribbon on her front held in place with a clasp shaped
like the same symbol that marked her pajamas, a rounded-off white
triangle rimmed in blue, with a blue exclamation mark inside it. She
wandered into the kitchen, calling a sleepy "Ohayooo~" to the two older
girls sitting at the kitchen table.
"Mmm, ohayo," commented an intelligent-looking young woman wearing oval
wire-rim glasses, a blue outfit with blocks of orange and green on the
front (the lower part fit rather like a one-piece swimsuit, with a long,
flared part behind it like a dress or long coat), and a headband with
what looked rather like a pair of blocky blue cat ears atop it holding
her short green hair in place. She was sipping at a cup of coffee, and
reading the Business section.
"Me-tan is such a slow starter," the other young woman commented. She
was dark-haired, the forelocks to either side of her head bound with a
barrette shaped like an X and a P. She was wearing a white short-sleeved
top with a broad blue stripe down the middle, which accented her large
chest, and a blue pleated short-skirt. She, too, was drinking a cup of
coffee, and reading the Entertainment section.
"Don't be hard on Me-tan for starting slow," the headband-wearing girl
replied mildly, without looking up from the paper. "She needs lots of
rest, so her memory doesn't get flooded."
"Mou!" the girl in braids protested, wheeling to face the breakfast
table. "XP-neechan! 2K-neechan! Hidoi!"
"Now, now, Me-tan," 2K-tan commented, turning her head to look at her
sister and adjusting her glasses. "You know we love you, for all your
faults."
"For all your many, many, many faults," XP-tan added, sipping her coffee.
"Oh. Okay," Me-tan replied, apparently seeming satisfied with that, and
turning to open the fridge. "Searching... searching..."
"Mmm, she'll be at that half the morning." XP-tan closed her section of
the paper and folded it, laying it on the tabletop.
"Well, what shall we do today?" Setting her own section of the paper
down, 2K-tan held her coffee cup in both hands. "It looks like it will
be warm."
"Still, it should be a nice day in the park. Why don't we go for a
walk? We'll take a picnic lunch."
"Alright. I'll make the lunch. You boot up Me-tan."
XP-tan nodded, rising from the table and walking over to the fridge.
She looked down at her "little" sister for a moment, before giving her a
light kick in the side of the foot.
"Ow!" Me-tan straightened up, holding a bottle of milk. "Neechan! What
was that for?!"
"We're going to the park. Go get ready."
"The park?! Wai! Wai!" Me-tan began jumping up and down, sloshing the
milk about rather haphazardly. "Wai! Wa-!" She suddenly stopped, eyes
taking on a vacant look and mouth slumping open, head tilting to the
side as shadows covered her upper face and a small wisp of smoke rose
from her head.
"She crashed again," XP-tan said over her shoulder, with a sigh.
"Well, go ahead and reboot her," 2K-tan said with the tone of long
experience, in the midst of making lunch. "It'll take her awhile, anyway."
With a shrug, XP-tan looked back at Me-tan, giving her another little
kick. The slack-jawed expression and smoking stopped, Me-tan's head
raising slightly. She said nothing, a rather sleepy look still on her face.

Once Me-tan had come around, just in time for the lunch to be tucked
away in a basket, the three of them headed for the front door. XP-tan,
rather skilled at multitasking, was carrying the basket, making sure
that none of them had forgotten anything, getting umbrellas in case it
rained, and getting the house keys. 2K-tan, businesslike and
professional, had called up a set of floating holographic screens and
keyboards, and was checking their route for construction work, and what
weather was expected that day. Me-tan was standing by the door, swaying
back and forth lightly.
"That's everything," XP-tan said after a few moments, glancing at
2K-tan's screens for a moment. "Looks good. Let's go."
"Ready, Me-tan?" 2K-tan asked with a smile, patting her sister on the head.
"Mm-hmmm!" Me-tan said happily, grinning and bobbing her head,
following the other two girls out the door.
Out on the front walk, a pretty young girl in a kimono was sweeping the
walk. The kimono was pink, with a sakura blossom pattern on it, the
broad red sash around her middle bearing a gold clasp in front that
formed a large nine and a smaller five, her long auburn hair bound at
top and bottom by ribbons.
"Ohayo, 95-neechan!" Me-tan called, waving excitedly.
"Ohayo," 95-tan replied softly, smiling a little.
"95-tan, we're going to the park." XP-tan shifted her load about a bit
in her arms. "Do you want to come?"
"Well. I do have to finish this," 95-tan said in her quiet, gentle
voice, glancing down at the walk. "But if you'd like me to come along.
Should I get 98-tan?"
"We don't want too much of a crowd," 2K-tan interjected, adjusting her
glasses again. "Let's just go as we are."
"Alright." 95-tan nodded, and set her broom aside. Tucking her hands
into the sleeves of her kimono, she fell into line, bringing up the
little procession... XP, 2K, Me, 95.

The procession of OS Girls wound their way through the park, having
arrived with only two crashes by Me-tan along the way. They fell to
companionably discussing the best place for the picnic, with 2K-tan
insisting that a scientific examination of the park's entire layout
would yield the best results.
	"XP-taaaaan!"
XP-tan blinked, then smiled as she recognized the voice, turning
towards the direction it had come from. "Buster!"
A young boy with wild blonde hair, wearing a white t-shirt, red shorts,
red sneakers, and a backwards-turned red cap raced up, clutching a blue
carrying case under one arm. He looked up at XP-tan with a bright smile
on his face. "XP-tan! Ohayo!"
"Ohayo, Buster." XP-tan rested one hand atop Buster's head, shifting
his cap around and rumpling his hair even further.
"Trend-san," 2K-tan greeted, pushing her glasses up on her nose.
"2K-tan," Buster replied, grinning at her as well.
"Oooo, it's XP-neechan's booooyfrieeeend!" Me-tan cooed, bursting into
giggles.
Both Buster and XP-tan blushed brightly, immediately whipping around to
face away from each other, XP-tan clutching her hands in front of her
and looking down. "N-no! Don't misunderstand, Me-tan!"
"H-hai," Buster murmured, rubbing the back of his head. "It's not like
that."
"Hm?" 95-tan tilted her head inquisitively.
"Buster has been helping me keep healthy," XP-tan murmured, smiling a
bit even though she was still blushing, tossing a little glance the
younger boy's way. "He's been very good, so far."
"Has he?" 2K-tan queried, grinning and resting one hand on her hip.
	"H-hai." XP-tan nodded, then made a bit of a face. "He's not...
invasive... like Symantec-sensei."
XP, 2K, and 95 all gave light shudders at the thought of the leering
dark-skinned bald man, with his labcoat and thick glasses that didn't
show his eyes.
"Buster is a nice boy, let's leave it at that," 2K-tan said with a
grin. "Hm. I think that tree will give us optimum shade..."
"Oh my," 95-tan interjected as the little group made their way towards
the large oak 2K-tan had pointed out. "But someone else is already there."
"Oh no." 2K-tan sighed, closing her eyes and shaking her head. "It's
those OTHER OS Girls."
"Let's try to get along," XP-tan said in a whisper. "Look, they're
coming over. Everyone just be nice."
"I'm always nice!" Me-tan chirped at full volume, causing mildly
exasperated (if loving) looks from her "elder" sisters.
"Well, hello there!" Called the blonde one of the pair of girls that
had approached the group. She was wearing a white, high-collared
one-piece, with long white gloves and tall white boots, a glowing red
apple tucked under one arm. "If it isn't the Micro$oft girls!"
Her companion gave a low muttering of what sounded like gibberish. She
was definitely a rather odd-looking girl, wearing a penguin-beaked
helmet with silver horns and a yellow ridge along the middle over her
long dark hair. She wore a blue shift with a gold, downward-pointing
trident on the front, a pair of yellow swim flippers on her feet, and in
one hand she carried a spear with three ribbons tied to it.
"X-tan, Linux-tan," XP-tan greeted politely, nodding to both.
"Taking over the park now, are we?" X-tan said with false cheerfulness,
trying to ignore the way that Me-tan was eyeing her apple.
"For the last time, X-tan, we are not trying to 'take over' anything,"
XP-tan said with a sigh, resting her hand atop Buster's head as he
scooted a little closer to her side.
"You all think you're so superior," X-tan accused, finally frowning
outright.
"Dev null bash bash hex," muttered Linux-tan.
"We're quite willing to admit you're better than us in some manners,
X-tan," XP-tan said, a little bit of desperation in her voice as she
tried to be a peacemaker. "You're such a good artist, your graphics look
amazing."
"I'm just as good as you at EVERYTHING!" X-tan declared.
"Play any good games, lately?" 2K-tan enquired mildly, smirking a
little and resting both hands on her hips.
X-tan flushed angrily. "That's... er... I mean... that's beside the
point! HEY!" This last was shouted as Me-tan grabbed the apple from
under her arm. "Give it back! AAAAAAA!" The white-garbed girl flung her
hands up and to one side, one foot raising, as Me-tan glommed her mouth
over one corner of the apple. "Nuuuuu!"
	"Me-tan!" XP-tan exclaimed.
"Me-tan, give it back," 2K-tan scolded.
"Mmph?" Me-tan blinked innocently. There was a loud pop from her lips
as X-tan yanked the apple away from her, then gazed mournfully at the
large, perfectly-shaped bite mark in the corner.
"Just look at it," X-tan bemoaned with a sniffle.
"We're really very sorry," XP-tan offered. "She's a little out of control."
"I'm gonna get you!" X-tan wailed, perching her bite-marked apple atop
her head and running at Me-tan, who squealed and took off running. X-tan
remained in hot pursuit, fists raised threateningly above her head.
"So much for a quiet day at the park," 2K-tan murmured, shaking her
head ruefully.
"Oh my," 95-tan said quietly, putting one hand to her mouth and
watching as the other two OS-girls bounded all over the park, Me-tan's
hands way out in front as if to lend her added speed, X-tan's fists
waving up and down angrily.
XP-tan sighed, looking at Linux-tan. "We really are quite sorry about
any trouble your friend's been put to."
"Kernel bash deltree bash bash null dev," Linux-tan grumbled, waving
her spear a bit before turning and wandering off.
"Did... you understand any of that?" XP-tan asked, looking aside at 2K-tan.
	2K-tan shrugged. "I don't think anyone actually understands Linux-tan,
though it seems like a lot of people like to feel really superior by
claiming they do."
"Buster, would you like to share our picnic?" XP-tan offered, smiling
again as she looked down at him.
	"Sure!"
The little group began settling in under the tree, the basket being
opened and lunch handed out. Off in the background, the chase continued
up a hill, until Me-tan crashed again and fell on her face, X-tan
toppling right on top of her, her apple falling off her head and going
rolling along the ground.
