In TOS, it was Kronos, but they retconned it for TNG or the movies,
because why would an alien race with no contact between cultures
until thousands of years after the relevant time period be named for
a Greek god? But that's beside the point, the point is, work with me,

Which, you know, explains why the Romulans (and their homeworlds) are 
still named after the brothers who founded Rome. At least they 
retconned in an explanation for the name "Vulcan". (IIRC, the 
explanation is that that's what the human explorers called it, before 
they could communicate with the inhabitants, and the inhabitants 
decided that the Standard name of their planet should be that. Very 
logical, y'know. Which doesn't quite explain the "First Contact" movie, 
but then Star Trek never has been quite straightforward.)
