I believe it is Lawrence Bloch who wrote in his book "Telling Lies for
Fun and Profit" (a must read by the way) that nobody expects amateur
painters, knitters or crafters (as examples) to go out and produce
original works of great quality and sell them; it is a hobby.  But if
for some reason people write stories as a hobby, the expectation for
their hobby changes and all of a sudden it is expected that they should
write for publication.

Writing is a hobby.  Most of us write (I belive) because we are under a
compulsion to write; writing is painful but "not writing" can be even
more so.  Sometimes writing is easy and enjoyable also.  Either way, to
dismiss writing fanfiction as a not worthy goal is missing the whole
point of recreation and enjoyment.
