I have to agree with the sentiment about selling works to yourself.  I
worked as a technical writer while in college, along with doing IT
work.  As a general rule, my writing was bland, to the point, and
utterly humorless.  It was impersonal, and though I was good at it, I
went home at night, curled up with a good book, and read to myself
thinking 'boy, why can't I write stuff like this.'  Then a good friend
of mine had me preread some of his personal fiction for a class, and I
found that I enjoyed his story.  so much, in fact, that I went on to
write a small fanfic based on his short story.  (for those of you who
wonder, he is still an unknown, and my story is still sitting on a
notepad beside my bed). 

Regardless, it is MUCH simpler to write about someone elses fiction, to
use the settings and people from those stories, and write something
'good' rather than to try to completely envison a story, start to
finish, with detail.  Not that fanfic writers are 'inferior' or lack
the creativity TO write an original short story, but because of the
fact that the one great idea has never struck them, fanfiction is a way
to polish up their writing style, and put it into a format that is not
only fun, but also able to be related to by other people.  I use it
personally in this way.  I realize that I am not the best writer in the
world, and I give thanks to authors like Krista Perry, DB Sommer, and
Gary Kleppe for what they do.  I would also give them the support that
any good author, and all of them ARE good authors, by buying their
books if they ever were to write an original fiction.
