Sure I know. It was an accident. Even I, the
greatest scientific genius in the universe, did not
see it coming. But I am grateful, because this
accident saved my daughter, and eventually myself.
One of the problems with self-teaching neural nets is
that, eventually, they accumulate all kinds of
eccentricities. The easy thing to do is just wipe and
reset their matricies, but it's usually better to
clean out any oddities so it can keep using what it's
learned. Only the extremely curious would let such a
system run to see what it becomes. I wouldn't be a
scientist if I wasn't curious.
So, when my messaging software started displaying a
preference for quoting messages with carrots, I let it
be. The system it evolved seems remarkably similar to
what's come into use in Earth's email, with mostly the
same justifications. I sometimes wonder if Ryo-ohki
tapped into the early email networks and helped guide
their evolution, but neither she nor Ryoko will say.
Ryo-ohki's core intelligence was a copy of my
software, when it started displaying basic affection
and protective emotions. At that point, I needed to
replace it to get work done, but I was raising Ryoko
by then, and she viewed the software as a friend. I
couldn't break her heart, so I designed Ryo-ohki as a
new body for the AI.
Ryoko was supposed to be raised by herself, without
any friends. I did not see why Kagato wanted things
that way until he betrayed us. The only reason he did
not object to Ryo-ohki was that I convinced him she
would be loyal only to Ryoko. Which she was, but not
the way he expected.
When Kagato took control of Ryoko, he tried to erase
her memories, her emotions, everything that makes up
her soul. He succeeded, but not before Ryo-ohki made
a backup. If she had not, there would have been
nothing of my daughter left to want to free herself
from Kagato's control; her duel with Yosho would have
been to the death, even after he took her gems. But
when Kagato's control was severed, Ryo-ohki's backup
reasserted itself, Ryoko surrendered, and you know the
rest of that tale.
...oh, you meant the carrots in the field! No, sorry,
Tenchi, I don't know how she came to like them.
