it might be more in character to do so.

It probably is, but it's not that the language was deliberately shredded for
humorous effect.  If that's what DB wanted to do, he would have to connect
the dots to point it out for readers (they are, in my experience, a nitpicky
lot, but then again so are we).

But I know a dead horse when I beat one. :)

Just a thought.  Thanks again for the lovely story; Azumanga is sorely in
need of more fanfiction, isn't it?
