This is enough to make me break several years of consistant silence.
Firstly I liked it. It was smart, clever, definetly unique and
more than just
a litle well done. The narration was ...deft I think. There
was a great deal
of American 'Twang' to it. Almost like the average Joe
relating the story to a
the audiance.
Thank you. I certainly tried. And I think I'm american to my bones, so it
was easy.
The structure is sound; I think there is not quite enough
emotional content to
impact just how dire those first days were but then people are
hardy and when
the turnaround in a conflict emerges the initial bleak
situation is hastily
forgotten.
I tend to go flat in high-stress times. I'm normally quite cheerful, but
under stress I go zombie. Unemotional (on the surface), analytical.
Regarding the whole 'sensativity' issue.
Don't.
Don't change a thing.
Several reasons.
1. It would radically alter your narrator. Instead of being
'Joe Average' who
is just relating events as they happened it would turn him
into Yuppie-Man
who's intrested in making sure no one's feelings ever get hurt.
Right. Like that's going to happen in a crisis zone.
Yeah, I have to agree with you. Sure, I'm over-painting, but that happens.
Latter on I do acknowledge that not all of them were ineffective, but think
about which mulluhs outside the country are going to manage to get airtime
in such a situation?
2. The aformentioned crisis zone. Those situations are ugly
and these people
are dealing with one where it's more than possible that the remains of
someone's pot luck supper are going to stand up and eat you
back. Remaining
mindful of other peoples cultural sensitivities takes a low
profile in those
instances.
Not to mention that I'm pissed at segments of the muslim population as it
is. If you read the Jacksonian essay that I linked to at the bottom, you'll
realize that I'm A: At war B: Total Victory is the Goal C: The demonstrators
are most likely providing aid & comfort to the enemy, so D: They're valid
targets.
3. It would 'clean up' a dark time. Tales of times like these
are ugly and
good narration should reflect that. Some form of editing that
would shatter
Suspension of Disbeief easily. That's bad news.
A couple of fixes, not to my viewpoint so much, but to the realities of the
world.
An analogy(Though wether it's good or bad I can't say) would
be the difference
between old War World II movies of D-Day, which were nice,
restrained even,
and the scene depicted in S.Private Ryan which were...not. But
they were
real....ish.
Old WWII were produced in a time where people were, well, exhasted of war.
Our population is more numb of the realities. Also the improvement in
special effects helps.
4. Anything even remotely PC and especially readers who suggest changes
because based on being PC, make me physically ill.
Good enough.
This ...situation is what has had a stranglehold on my
preferred genre of
fanfiction these days and why, despite my best efforts, the bulk of fan
ficcers within it will never hold a candle to the talent
usually found here.
Suggestions that ultimatly could cause a similar strangehold
in the FFML will
be stepped on.
