Keitaro Urashima sighed as he stepped off the train that took him to
Tokyo University each morning and back to Hinata Inn each night. He
wished he didn't have to make the commute, but it wasn't TOO bad, and
the station generally wasn't as crowded as it could have been at a
different hour.
As he made his way towards the stairs, he noticed someone standing
beside a cardboard box, on the front of which had originally been
written 'Free To A Good Home'. The 'To A Good Home', however, had been
scribbled out, in what looked like a rather angry manner, and below that
had been written a much more ragged 'To ANYONE, PLEASE'.
Standing beside the box was a very tired, very frustrated-looking
woman, quite tall and with dusky skin, long, dark green hair falling
down her back, wearing very nice designer clothes that were nevertheless
rumpled and looked like they'd been worn more than one day in a row.
"Please." She seemed to have noticed him looking, and had turned
pleading eyes towards him, her voice an exhausted rasp. "Please, take
one. Take as many as you can carry. -Please-."
"Er..." Keitaro rubbed the back of his head. He was used to odd women
making odd requests and demands, and knew it best to at least have a try
at going along. He edged a little closer and glanced down into the box,
expecting to see some rambunctious kittens, or maybe puppies.
And that's certainly what they looked like for a moment, albeit curled
up instead of bounding about. But as he adjusted his glasses, he
realized that they were simply semi-spherical collections of fur, and,
as he watched, they shuddered and gave off a cooing noise.
"GAH!" Keitaro leapt back in shock, plastering himself against the
wall. "What ARE they?!"
"Oh, what does that matter?!" the woman snapped angrily, apparently
having exhausted her patience. Then, with a wild look in her eyes, she
grabbed Keitaro by the front of his coat and hauled him close, staring
at him nose-to-nose. "You have. To. Take them! I can't take it any more!
There's more and more of them every time I look around! Soon they'll
completely fill the Gates of Time and then all of reality will be
destroyed!" Her voice turned very low, and very flat. "And that would
definitely put a crimp in your plans to have sex with Narusegawa Naru
exactly one year, two months, thirteen days, and half an hour from now,
mister Urashima."
"..." Keitaro stared at her with his eyes bugging out, then flailed
wildly. "Ack! Okay, okay, I'll take 'em, just let me go!" He oofed as
the box was immediately shoved into his arms, and he turned and ran up
the stairs as quickly as he could.
"Oh thank God," Setsuna groaned, slumping back against the wall. Then,
with a weary sigh, she waved a hand and conjured another boxful of
tribbles. 'Twelve down. Ninety billion to go.'
