Subject: [FFML] Re: [Fic][Ranma/Love Hina] Chasing Dreams Chaps 1-2
1) The set up to have Ranma leave is, IMO, pretty
weak and has problems.
Ranma feels such feelings over a woman he doesn't
even know. Maybe it's what
he wants, but he doesn't really connect. I could
almost believe it if he had
some childhood memory *of* his Grandma, but this was
unconvincing.
....
Let me guess, you haven't read the Nodoka introduction
in the manga yet?
Actually, I've read the entire series a few times. The reaction you are
trying to get here is only slightly less subtle than being run over by a
truck and has the feeling of being hammered into place with a sledge hammer.
And a mother isn't a grandmother. Especially to the Japanese culture. Ranma
would probably really like to have more family. But the angle and angst you
are aiming at is, IMO, unbelievable for Ranma.
2) The travelling money. Sigh. Lots of problems
here. Since when do the
Genma and the Tendo's actually open Ranma's mail?
Since that mail looked like it was bulging with yen
bills.
How's the best way to put it? It's silly. If it was that evident that it had
cash inside it, it would have never made it to the Tendo's.
Ranma's gotten several
letters and none were ever opened this way.
As I recall, that would be because they were letters
of challenge.
It's still a letter.
The
"missed" letter that only
Ranma spotted. If a lawyer wrote it (which is a
given, IMO) it's going to be
very noticable.
"If a lawyer wrote it"
Why would family, with that kind of resources available, not just show up to
inform Ranma directly? Mail is impersonal.
It's doubtful that cash would be
sent, it would probably be
a check or money order.
It was cash.
Sending cash is a *STUPID* thing to do. Even by normal people that don't
know a silly thing about Genma. If it's evident enough that anyone can see
that it's possibly cash, it wouldn't have even made it through the mail.
And if they do know about Genma even in the slightest (which anyone who is
semi-closely related to Nodoka is) they'd never trust the cash to actually
get to Ranma.
And the return address would
have been from a law
firm.
Will explain this a little more in Chap 3.
It's a bad McGuffin, designed solely to show the Tendo's and Genma in the
worst possible light, to force a reaction out of Ranma to get him to leave
the Tendos.
*ANY* of these things would have been a
clue-truck to Nabiki or Akane
that this was money from a will and only for Ranma.
Not really. And of course as I have repeatedly said
before, they DON'T KNOW.
Is Ranma the only one that would notice the letter? Unlikely. Is Ranma the
only one that would make sure that there isn't more money in the envelope
and spot the letter? Hell, no. They probably would have wondered what stupid
thing did Ranma do to get the money and what trouble its going to bring.
It's simply implausible.
It would have been
reprehensible that anyone would just take the money.
Genma might try it, if
no one else had seen it. But around the kitchen
table?
Genma and Sound do a lot of reprehensible things, why
is this one so hard to believe?
Because Genma will usually try to convince Ranma that its better to give him
the money so he can tough it out and walk there. It's training! Or some
other lame-brained type scheme. He'll have to justify it to himself, no
matter how threadbare the silly excuse is.
Genma isn't *just* a thief, otherwise he'd have robbed banks ages ago for
all the money he needs. Why he isn't, is matter of Genma's quirky and wierd
martial artists ethics. Genma likes to think of himself as basically a good,
but weak person.
He's just kind of silly and stupid about how he goes about it.
3) Akane non-reaction to Ranma was fairly
thouroughly covered. It wasn't
Akane, it was a cliche-Akane for author's who don't
like her.
How so? The others kept using these "Bush Iraq WMD"
style accusations, but gave no evidence of such.
Actually, I saw several good examples. Unless Akane's IQ and emotions were
suddenly lobotomized, she would have noticed Ranma's feelings, at least a
little. And Akane does care, as much as she won't normally let herself
admit.
It wasn't even
that nasty of one, but it was the Akane that (even
if just to herself,
kinda) cares for Ranma.
Er, come again?
Typoed.
{It wasn't even that nasty of one, but it *wasn't an* Akane that (even if
just to herself, kinda) cares for Ranma.}
4) Ranma doing almost the exact same thing as the LH
main guy (which I'm
spacing the name right now.) Ranma would react
totally differently, I think.
But I don't know LH that well, so I'm going to leave
it at that.
You need to read the manga.
I'm assuming you mean Love Hina? I did make it through several volumes.
You REALLY need to read the manga before saying things
like that.
Just by Ranma's physical difference, he's going to react differently. And
all of the weird (read: Shampoo-glomping etc.) situations is going to give
Ranma a different set of reactions.
5) As a side note, the thing about LH having bigger
ki-attacks than Ranma?
Not likely, even though I haven't seen that much of
Love Hina. But I think
I'd have remembered hearing something if they rocked
mountains or fought
someone like Saffron or Herb.
What part of "After the Shi Shi Hoko dan arc but
before Nodoka's introduction" did you miss the first
time?
Man, it's been a while. I'm pretty sure that the Hyrio Shotan Ha was volumes
before the Shi Shi Hoko Dan episode. And the SSHD can be used to carve
tunnels through solid rock. Kuno was chopping walls and tress in the first
episode.
At this point the strongest Ki attack Ranma has
witnessed would be the perfect Shi shi hokodan.
I'd argue that the HSH is more powerful, but even so, the SSHD cuts right
through solid rock for tunneling. The perfect form is just a useful
explosive attack that doesn't hurt the user.
But Love Hina isn't about wacky martial arts, it's
got a different theme.
I know that. That's why I'm using it.
