Heya,

I must agree with David Johnston and DB Sommer here. Without the nude
scene, I don't think Akane would be as scared, threatened and hostile as
she is in the manga. She certainly wouldn't be happy about the forced
engagement or to her being effortlessly beaten by the would-be fiance,
but I doubt she'd use the 'pervert' crack. Possibly she'd just object
that she couldn't get married to a boy that changes into a girl, saying
it's just too weird. (Perhaps she'd say something like 'Am I supposed to
call him Princess, too?')
Or perhaps she could use 'hentai' instead, with it's double meaning that
Ken Arromdee just reminded us of. Ranma could think she means pervert,
whereas she'd clarify that she meant a shape-changer.

Actually, Dave, Akane suffers from a logical disconnect. Her father
doesn't teach any more, and she herself (apparently) defeats all
comers. She refuses to believe that her wins over Kuno are a result
of his pulling his punches (she can't stand the implied insult, so
refuses to admit the possibility). That makes her the best in Nerima,
at least in her own mind.

Akane does show some awareness over Kuno, though ("...when he fights a
male opponent, Upperclassman Kuno is *very* skilled"). She's not quite
consistent on this, probably because she doesn't want Ranma to
underestimate her.

snip Johnston's comments

Dave, I have to agree with Granberry here. Akane, even in the manga,
seems to have this obsession that "Boy = pervert". Or, to be a little
more to the point, any boy with what WE would consider a normal
healthy interest in the opposite sex = pervert.
The only males she seems to be
able to deal with are people like her father, and Dr. Tofu. And the
occasional boy who is either totally intimidated by her (Ryouga), or
who does NOT have what would be considered a healthy sexual interest.
Akane prefers "Guilty until proven innocent", it seems.

Disagree, at least partly. Yes, Akane is to some extent afraid of male
sexuality, but when she objects loudly and violently, I don't think it's
so much to 'normal healthy interest' but rather to boys who show their
interest by violating her privacy or that of other girls, (through
peeping, grabbing, fondling, etc.) showing they have no respect for the
girls.
This might to her indicate that such a boy doesn't exercise any control
over his impulses, and so might be dangerous - to her, if he's a better
martial artist, and in any case to normal girls, in which case it would
be her duty to protect the latter.
She doesn't call the boys at Furinkan perverts in vol. 1 from what I
remember, but their refusal to take her own choice into consideration
clearly is a big contribution to her suspicion and distrust of boys in
general when the manga start. And no wonder. I mean, is she supposed to
think, "All these boys are obviously showing a normal healthy interest
in me for boys their age, so why should I be upset that they don't care
a whit for my own feelings?". Or with voyeurs, is she just supposed to
lay back and enjoy being peeped on?

Really, she often seems to be blind to the fact that men only COME
from boys, appearing to prefer to believe that men like Dr. Tofu
simply
sprang into being fully formed as men.

I've often thought of doing a fic around a scene where Akane is
brutally disillusioned by accident, overhearing the doctor discussing
his own youthful cases of peeping on girls, going for panty shots,
and other hentai behavior. Or even her father reminiscing about the
good old days of skirt chasing. I can really see her going into a
state of shock, thinking "Oh my god, they're ALL PERVERTS!! AHHHHH!"

Or perhaps she might conclude that you just can't trust any boys her
age, but that there might be hope for some of them in the future. ;)
