Apparently this usage has become accepted recently then. The dictionary I was using was rather old admitedly. I was using 1919 Webster and when I checked a newer one (1981) it had a second definition that allowed for your usage. It's kind of disarming though. I remember several of my English teachers raising a big stink about it and it was even mentioned in a Sandra Bullock movie where she played a speech writer or something. Oh well.
