I'm not sure what the point of this post is other than that of a rant,
with a request for feedback for what should be a moot point, but for some
reason I responded anyway. :) In the end, you can do whatever you want
with your story, because it's your own.
I liked Brightly Burning, or what's available of it so far, and HikaGo
stands as one of my all time favorite series. As far as the question of
whether or not to branch off an alternate universe to your story, feel
free to do so if that's what your muse is leading you to do. Now if it'll
work well or not, who's to say. I'd like to believe that anything
could conceivably be written if it is well executed.
Although, when Brightly Burning goes obviously shounen ai, the story is
going to have to be pretty damn good in my eyes to make me see beyond that
and want to continue reading, because honestly, that's not my thing at
all. So with that said, a divergence in the story, moving the yaoi stuff
somewhere else while keeping with your original premise - one that I liked
and found interesting, would be nice.
By "Universe A" and "Universe B," I'm not sure if you mean to change
scenes with that in the same chapter or be completely different stories.
It really doesn't seem to me like Burning Brightly would support that well
as it stands now. The sci-fi element wasn't introduced early enough in
the plot and if you did it now, I'm thinking it'd feel tacked on as an
afterthought.
Of course, probably the best solution, in my opinion, is just to ditch the
shounen ai aspect altogether. If people bitch about that, direct them to
the other 90% of HikaGo fanfiction that *is* shounen ai.

Here's something that's made me curious.
I've recently gotten into a fic, "Brightly Burning." I
don't care if you've read it to reply, this is a
general school of thought I'm curious on.
What's the thought on doing two seperate stories from
the same fic?
I mean... take the story up to chapter four, then
diverge onto two different lines? Have a "Universe A"
and "Universe B"?
I've seen this done before, and it's been mixed
results. The talented writers seem to carry this off
VERY well... everyone else kinda goes... kerplot. I'm
thinking this might be an interesting challenge.
The basics come from the "what way do I want to take
this?" and I have two distinct options and I can't
decide between the two. One goes shonen ai and the
other doesn't - and this leads to two VERY different
universes. And I have two different schools of
readers... so I'd have an audience for both.
And me? I like both and I think both would be fun to
write. Since I'm tying up a lot of loose ends with
OTHER fics... it might be a fun challenge...
But I'm worried about the kerplot. Is it egotistical
to make an AU of your own AU?
The nice thing about the FFML is you can count on
blantant honesty.... ^^;;
