My opinion: if you have the time and the focus, go for it. By
definition, all fanfic is non-canon and AU. The stories stand or
fall on their own merits, and that mean it's up to your skills
as a storyteller. We are all extending the ouvre by filling in
extrapolations which the original author had to skip or never
saw.

Perhaps, considering your query, your toughest job will be
taking your own creations seriously enough to do them individual
justice. Don't mock your own works, especially not within the
work itself (many readers, myself included, don't like to read
that kind of thing); even comedy considers itself worthy of
attention.
