"Was" is correct.  The subject of the sentence is "inch", not "walls".
"Walls" is the object of a prepositional phrase.

Both!  I'd prefer "half-drag, half-carry".

In some of these cases the comma can be optional.  Like in between "cases"
and "the" in the previous sentence.
