The relativity of Fan Fiction



A recent article from MSN.com discussed the booming internet phenomenon
called "fan fiction." This phenomenon, almost as old as the World Wide Web
itself, has spurred up many sites dedicated to these works of fiction... not
fact. And these works always relate to some copyrighted fandom somewhere in
the world... more respecitvely as of late to the Harry Potter book series by
J. K. Rowling. So the question that is left to be answered is: Is what these
people doing violating the very laws our government stands on? In my opinion
as a United States citizen, fellow reader and fellow fan fiction writer of
Harry Potter: no! These stories of fantasy and "fiction" relate around Mrs.
Rowlings characters but we do not profit any way in these domains. We don't
get paid to write out another chapter to our highly-acclaimed fan fic. All
we get in return is the admiration of the millions of Harry Potter fans we
respect and adore. The next question poses a bigger threat: Is such material
that involves sexual situations and violence susceptable?

For decades now, the world has lived under the tyrannical eye of the Porn
industry. Thousands of men and women, even children, have submitted their
bodies to be photographed and video recorded for the pleasure of others.
Lots of times, these men, women, and children even delve into intercourse
with other men, women and children for pleasure, money and the entertainment
for others. And now we have major media companies shutting down websites
that have sexually explicit stories on fictional characters? Shouldn't we be
stopping these god awful Pornography companies? Now I state, as a man, this
kind of stuff can be appealing to myself as well as other men. But it does
not mean such material should be made in the first place. I am not here to
shun those who watch this material, but those who make it. Though some can
say you should shun those who watch it as well because they are supporting
these people that make it. You can argue this till the cows come home, but
there will never be a justifiable conclusion. So not to stray from the topic
at hand, I will continue with my said discussion.

Fan fiction writers do not make one penny for the stories they write. Even
the ones that write the sexually explicit ones. These people are not like
those Pornography companies that get millions upon millions of dollars just
to watch a man and a woman have sex. No. These writers write these stories
for there own reasons and choose to allow others to read them. No one has to
pay to read these stories. No one has to register for an account to read
these stories. No harm is done in these stories unless you allow your son or
daughter to stumble upon them. Most fan fiction sites include disclaimers
that state that they do not own any of the characters or ideas expressed in
these stories unless they were created by the author themself. And as well
with sexually explicit stories, another warning page is very often found to
warn the reader that the content they are going to be reading will have
sexually explicit content in it and they are warned this may offend them and
to not read them if they are under the age of consent, depending on their
country. Me, as an American, my age of consent is 18. I am 18 and have read
these type of stories. Do they offend me? No. Should these stories be
available to younger people? No. That's what the warning pages are for. If
you cannot trust your child is old enough to surf the internet without your
supervision then sit with them while they chat or while they browse the web.
You can keep them from these sites if they offend you so much. This is art,
people. The art of the written word and the art of expressing the ideas that
these authors have for the characters they so enjoy getting to know.
