This is how alternate spellings HAPPEN. "Color" became an accepted
alternate spelling for no better reason than that thousands of people,
led by Noah Webster, misspelled "Colour". it's worth noting that, as i
write this, "Colour" gets the red underline treatment where "Color"
does not. there is _no_ valid authority to say that something is
correct or incorrect in an evolving language _except_ perhaps the
search result counts.

That's only because you have a US speller, Canadian spellers accept both,
UK/International spellers (used by most foreigners with no local English
dialect) red underline 'color', etc...  I've no idea what happens in New
Zealand and Australia, India, etc...  You are right that this is how
alternate spellings come into being - however - these alternate spellings
are usually 'easier on the eyes' and 'simpler' in some way.  I don't think
'sceance' is simpler than 'seance' (nb. what is the other spelling?).
English is definetely an evolving language - however this does not mean we
shouldn't at least try to spell correctly. AvErYZ wE EnD Ap WyF JaNk like
this - this is more and more common on the internet - and I think most of
us find it a pain to read.
