My apologies for this post, but I really don't have
any other contact with Ranma fans except through this
list. I wasn't sure where to get this information, but
I was wondering exactly how accurate Takahashi's
"Ranma" is when it comes to arranged marriages?

I have a friend who is trying to write a story which
an arrange marriage comes in, but she ran into a
roadblock after finding out they WEREN'T the way there
were portrayed in Gravitation (the manga she is more
familiar with). She and I are both sticklers for
cultural detail, when we can FIND it, so...

This is what her research dug up:

"So-called "arranged marriages" are actually more like
brokered blind dating. A professional matchmaker
collects "portfoliios" from young women looking for
mates and tries to match them to young men who also
use her services.

She arranges a date between the two, which she and/or
the two families supervise for at least part of the
evening. The couple then decides if they want to meet
again; if not, the matchmaker tries another prospect
for the woman.

I came across *no* references to distinguished
families betrothing their children at birth or during
childhood in contemporary Japan. The closest I came
was one case story where a father took a portfolio on
his daughter to a matchmaker without her knowledge.

Furthermore, even the brokered arranged marriages are
on the decline, and have been so since World War II."

So... how out there is Ranma? I'm really interested in
a possibility like Ukyou's...

Off list responses before Gary squashes me like a bug.
