Well, let's see if fanboyism and good fanfiction are mutually
compatible terms, shall we? :nervous:

Probably OOC. Probably crappy. Definitely written under 90 minutes and
without the help of a pre-reader. BLATANT self-insertion, which is
probably a bad, bad idea for my first fanfic in the Eva category. But
what the heck. I originally wrote this as a means of dealing with
writer's block after a case of mild depression, but do review anyway; I
don't mind being roasted if necessary. Thanks in advance.

NEON GENESIS EVANGELION: ENDGAME
PART OF THE "BIGGEST DREAMER" STORYLINE
PROLOGUE

"... I accept your offer."

"I knew you would."

"Shinji!" Misato demanded, incredulous. "You can't be serious!"

Shinji Ikari stared hollowly at the giant display holopanel within
NERV Command, dully wishing that it showed him something other than
what it was now. "I have to, Misato-san," he replied quietly. "Can't
you see? I must go... I have to help Rei and Asuka."

"We don't have Unit01," Ritsuko pointed out, her arms folded as she
cast her gaze on the holoscreen as well. Evangelion Units 00 and 02
were disabled and deprived of their power supply cables, kneeling
powerlessly on the ground, left to whatever mercy the Angel had for
them. "What do you think you're going to do without it?"

"He wants me," Shinji mumbled in reply. "He'll let Rei go... let Asuka
go..."

"This is ridiculous," Misato bristled. "You're not stepping outside
the base, Shinji. That's an order."

"You're going to pull rank on me, Misato-san?"

Misato turned up, staring at the high commanders of NERV at their
seat, high above her. Both Gendou and Fuyutsuki refused to meet her
gaze. The NERV Operations Director bit her lower lip, giving an inner
sigh of frustration and defeat. Even when things came down to this,
Gendou refused to say anything for his son.

"The boy has decided. Your judgements are inconsequential."

"Let," Shinji took a deep breath, attempting to calm himself. "Let
them go first!"

"Agreed. Release them."

The Angel stepped back, relinquishing its grip on Units 00 and 02.
Both EVA units slumped on the ground immediately, their battery packs
depleted of power. Shinji smiled slightly, despite the circumstances.
Asuka would be angry, furiously so. He didn't feel like facing her at
the moment. But she was safe... Rei was safe... Tokyo-3 would be
safe... that was all that mattered.

I'm nothing to you, father, am I?

"The First and Second Child, and their Evangelions, are yours. And as
for Unit01..."

"Unidentified object has appeared in EVA Docking Bay #16!" Maya
reported frantically. "It's... I don't believe it... it's Unit01..."

"My God..." Misato whispered. "How did he do that?"

"Several maintenance repairs may be required, I'm afraid. It's damaged
a bit, what with fighting against the Vandread units and all, but I've
kept my end of the bargain. Now, Shinji, are you ready?"

Shinji nodded dumbly.

"He will not be following you anywhere," Gendou spoke icily. "Switch
alert status to code red. Prepare to sortie Unit01 with Shinji as the
pilot."

Shinji felt a little odd, like as if a jolt of electricity had shocked
him and left him with no feeling at all in his arms and legs. The rest
of the NERV personnel in the command centre noticed it quickly, and by
the time they did, the outline of the Third Child's body was beginning
to blur and fade into an indistinct border, parts of his form coated
with shimmers of every color of the visible spectrum. Shinji opened
his mouth to scream, but no sound came.

Then Shinji disappeared, falling literally through the floor. THE
solid floor.

A stunned silence swept across the command centre for several
unnerving moments. Ritsuko's brows, in particular, were knitted in
shock and astonishment borne of a cold recognition. "How..."

"Trying to slip out of your end of the deal, Commander Ikari?" the
voice was far less lighthearted now. "I can't say I didn't expect it,
even though you had no part to keep in the bargain. I sincerely hope I
won't have to do business with you any more in the future."

"Who are you?" Vice-Commander Fuyutsuki spoke, his voice sounding more
haggard and weary than anyone had ever remembered as he did. "What is
your true purpose here with us?"

The unidentified Angel faded away from view on the display holoscreen,
much in the same manner as Shinji had vanished in a blurred, rainbow-
colored flash, leaving both EVA units alone on the battlefield. The
voice cleared its throat before it spoke again. "For all intents and
purposes, you may know me as God. I am of the same rank and level of
existence as the being that created your universe... no, perhaps more.
Even your God has not the power in your world as I do now."

"God, is it?" Fuyutsuki repeated, with a hint of wry amusement in his
tone. "What does God seek from mere mortals such as we?"

"Everything... and nothing."

It started as nothing more than a small sphere of white light,
hovering motionlessly in the air above the two immobile Evangelions.
In the next instant, however, it exploded, quickly growing to engulf
all of Tokyo-3 until all the visual data that NERV satellite cameras
in high orbit could record was a big, white mass of static. Then, in
the next, amidst chaotic, frenzied orders and status reports, the same
explosion penetrated all 22 layers of solid granite, earth and special
armor plating that guarded the Geo-Front, sweeping across and
swallowing all of NERV headquarters in its wake, and not a single one
of NERV's numerous personnel stayed conscious long enough to watch the
explosion consume Earth itself, then spread out towards the cosmos for
all eternity.

                                 ~*~

Gendou Ikari opened his eyes, finding himself at his desk, in his
office, facing a whole lot of undone paperwork. Standing across his
desk, with a sombre expression, was Kouzou Fuyutsuki. Gendou placed
his pen aside, propping his elbows on his desk. "What is it,
Fuyutsuki?"

"The Third Angel has finally showed up," Fuyutsuki replied. "It will
arrive at the outskirts of Tokyo-3 in approximately one and a half
hours. Both the United Nations military taskforce and the Japanese
army are demanding an immediate audience with us."

Gendou's frown deepened. "So it's here at last."

"Yes," Fuyutsuki agreed. "After fifteen years, the purity of all
mankind will finally be put to its ultimate test."

"And what of the Third Child?"

"He is scheduled to arrive in thirty minutes. Commander Katsuragi is
now on her way to receive him."

"Then it is so," Gendou replied. "Tell them I will be ready in five
minutes."

Fuyutsuki nodded, turning to leave. The gray-haired Vice-Commander
stopped at the door, however. "You do know who the Third Child is,
don't you, Ikari?"

"I sent for him myself, Professor."

"Sou ka..." came the listless reply. The door shut with a soft, well-
oiled click behind Fuyutsuki as the man made his exit.
