"What do you have to report?"

"Sho for all rights should have been killed. The infirmary people are puzzled as to how he was injured."

"Which you will not tell them."

Gritting her teeth she continued, "Not only was he injured like Rei when the Entry Plug ejected, but the jarring from the impact tore upon the sutures, from the surgery they had to perform before. As well as opening up most of his wounds. He was coughing up his own blood! Why couldn't you have waited for his injuries to heal?!!"

Gendo just looked at her with his usual indifferent expression. Apparently she wasn't going to get an answer.

"How long before he can pilot an EVA again?"

"If we are not going to try and kill him with the physical stress, he needs at the very least a month and that is if he keeps responding as well to the treatment as he has and doesn't aggravate the injuries he has now."

"Have Captain Katsuragi summon the Third child."

"That is, lets see.. Ikari Shinji?"

"That is correct. I have a use for him."

"But sir he.."

Ritsuko trailed off the look he gave her brooked no argument.

"Yes sir, I'll get right on it."

Maya walked into the infirmary. She noticed that Rei was looking at Sho's unconscious form with a strange expression on her face. *I wonder what that is about.*

Sho once again was hooked up to a series of machines that not only monitored his condition but also, while less and less necessary, to keep his condition stabilized. Maya didn't like seeing him like this especially as she had started to become his friend over the time he was recovering last time.

*Things like this really shouldn't happen to people that young.*

Maya pulled up a chair next to the bed and sitting down began to read. She didn't pay attention to Rei who was still looking at Sho through her single red uncovered eye.

-Several Days Later-

Shinji Ikari stood at the train station. The person who was supposed to pick him up was not in evidence. From the note on the picture that she had added she apparently wasn't very mature. *Why am I even here?* Sirens began sounding but Shinji being completely unfamiliar with his surroundings and not particularly concerned whether he lived or died ended up just standing there at the otherwise abandoned train station. As he looked around he noticed a strange girl looking at him. Something about her seemed to draw in his attention.

All of the sudden birds seemed to erupt all around him. He covered his face and instinctively closed his eyes so as to avoid getting some foreign particle in his eyes. As the air calmed down again he noticed that the girl had mysteriously vanished. He noticed military equipment flying backwards, coming into his field of vision persistently firing on something. Then he saw what they were firing on a humongous abomination that could almost be considered to be humanoid in shape. A blue sports car broke the sort shocked trance he had fallen into when he had first laid eyes on the abomination as it pulled a dangerous turn maneuver resulting in it stopping with the driver side door facing him.

The door opened to reveal the immature, irresponsible, and apparently reckless as well lady who had sent him the packet containing among other things a picture pointing out her cleavage. Said very strange person decided to speak "Sorry, get in, am I real late..."

*That has to be the craziest..* He really wasn't allowed to complete the thought as he was dragged into the car.

Rei was the only one paying any attention to the form of Sho Akagi and so was the only one how noticed a ring of coruscating light briefly appear in the middle of his forehead.

"I see."

"Why are we stopping here?"

"Oh it perfectly safe." Misato pulled out a pair of binoculars and was observing the JSSDF's attempt to stop their opponent. Suddenly she noticed that JSSDF forces were clearing out. *What the..?* "They're going to drop an N2 mine!"

Shinji wasn't sure what a N2 was but Misato decided to tackle him into the car. He really only understood something was happening when the thing went off in a giant fireball. The car was forced to roll over several times before coming to rest on its side. Misato and Shinji both ended up poking their head over the side. Unluckily or luckily Misato had somehow managed to avoid becoming a Darwin Award candidate. Shinji decided that reckless was really too weak a word.

Maya sat at her respective station on the bridge, which was on the commander's right side and one of the three main consoles. The JSSDF generals celebrated victory behind her even though destruction of the target wasn't confirmed. Looking back at them *What fools, why are they so quick to claim victory?*

She looked back at her console as the Sub-Commander ordered them to confirm whether or not the target was destroyed. The monitors came back online and everyone was shocked at what they showed. *The N2 hardly hurt it at all.*

Shinji looked back at the sizable quantity of car batteries Misato had "borrowed."

"Those batteries, isn't that, theft?"

"Ah, don't worry about it. Ah, it's an emergency and we need a working car right. Ah, I am a government official after all, so everything's going to be perfectly, OK! Ok." and so Misato added another pathetic excuse to a long record of pathetic excuses.

"I don't think anyone would buy that excuse."

"Oh you're no fun. You know you aren't as cute as I'd thought you'd be."

"Is that so?"

"Oohh, angry? I'm sorry. Hahaha. You're just a boy after all."

"And you aren't as mature as I'd thought you'd be." *Of all the crazy things to say. You'd think you were talking to a small child. An adult that is the antithesis of maturity how disconcerting.*

In response to this Misato growled and performed some reckless swerving. Shinji decided to add petulant, childish, and dangerous to the growing list of adjectives.

Ritsuko was presently using some diving equipment as she performed her personal check of Unit 01's readiness. Everything seemed to be in order when her communicator buzzed and informed her that Misato had managed to get lost in the Geofront and would she please go and fetch her and the Third child before the world came down around their ears.

Swimming back up to the surface she took off her gear and put a labcoat over her swimsuit, "She got lost again?!!!"

Ritsuko intercepted Misato before she could earn herself a Darwin Award by causing Apocalypse and wiping out the rest of humanity with her just because she was too arrogant to admit she was lost and couldn't read a map.

"Why Ritsuko..."

"Why are you wasting my time, Captain? Don't you realize we're short on time and manpower!"

"So this is Ikari Shinji, the Third child?" Her tone made it more a statement then a question. *Misato no baka.*

"Yes, so how is unit one?"

"Its been prepped with B type equipment."

"Does it really work? It's never worked before has it?"

"The probability of activation is 0.0000000001%. Around here we just call it the "09 system."

"Does that mean it doesn't work?" Leaving the question to certain individuals watching the proceeding in Asgard to wonder what she was doing when Unit 00 was being tested with Rei.

"Don't be insulting. It's 09, as in Oni a Japanese Devil."

They entered a dark room and walked to the center of a catwalk. The door closed and the floodlights came on leaving Shinji face to face with a giant face. He began searching through his guide to NERV.

"You won't find it in there." Ritsuko admonished Shinji.

"What?" Shinji exclaimed.

"This is man's ultimate Fighting Machine, the synthetic lifeform known as Evangelion, Unit 01. Built here in secret it is mankind's last hope." *I sound like a announcer for one of those corn ball giant robot animes.*

Gendo stared down at those in the cage from the observation window.

"We're moving out."

"But Unit Zero is still in cryo-stasis."

"Technically that's incorrect but Unit 00 needs repairs." Ritsuko admonished.

"Huh, but but that would mean that you're going to use Unit 01?!!!" Once again Misato showed she was slow and unperceptive. A vein in Ritsuko's forehead bulged.

"There is no other way." Ritsuko admonished somewhat more forcibly.

"Wait! Rei can't do it yet can she? We don't have a pilot!"

Now maybe it was just the accumulated stress, maybe the author reinitializing NGE with normal anime antics, maybe just a low tolerance for stupidity, or a combination of the above but no matter what the cause Ritsuko managed to do the Flaming Bighead.

"Listen you worthless excuse for a military commander, stop acting like the rest of us are incompetent fools who haven't though things through. Now get your worthless arse up to that command center and stop wasting my time!" Turning on Shinji, "You, you are now a EVA pilot. Now take these." Ritsuko hands Shinji some hairclip like things. Pointing "Now get into that Entry Plug and pilot that EVA NOW!!!"

When faced with Ritsuko doing a Flaming Bighead and screaming orders in his face, Shinji did the smart thing. Which was to do what she said as quickly as possible so as to avoid bringing down her wrath on his head. He surprised himself with how fast he got to the Entry Plug given the right motivation.

The Bridge crew had a collective sweat drop. Even Gendo was stunned enough that he lost his composure but was quick to regain it. Misato made an all time best record in running speed as she fled to the bridge her body in this process showing her why being a alcoholic was bad for your health. Ritsuko strode onto the bridge and everyone else quickly got back to what they were supposed to be doing.

"Cage now in position for docking."

"Signal plug terminator now being ejected."

"Roger. Inserting the Entry Plug."

"Plug locked in place."

"Connecting Unit 01."

"Filling the entry plug."

Over the com came Shinji's voice, "Huh? What is this stuff?".

"Don't worry. Once your lungs are filled with LCL, your blood will be oxygenated directly. You'll get used to it." Ritsuko reassured him.

"I think I'm gonna be sick."

Misato started to make an immature childish comment on him being a boy then glancing at Ritsuko thought better of it.

"Connecting main power."

"All circuits transmitting."

"Connecting secondary contact."

"A-10 connection normal."

"Configure the language interface for Japanese." ordered Ritsuko.

"All preliminary contacts established, performance nominal."

"Bi-directional circuits are open. Synchronization ratio at 41.3%," Maya informed them.

"Amazing!" Ritsuko commented.

Launch preceded, the Evangelion was unrestrained, had its battery fully charged, and launched in a matter of minutes. It went from deep in the Geofront to the surface where multilayered armored doors opened and EVA 01 came to a stop. The movement making it stand upright as the final locks were released is seemed to slump.

"The EVA is controlled by you mind, it will respond to your thoughts or will if you prefer. First try walking."

Shinji made it walk while he muttered "walking, walking...". His opponent the creature from before appeared in front of him. The moment of terror disturbed his concentration making the EVA misstep and proceed to fall flat on its face, not in a particularly bad approximation of a facefault.

Before he could get his wits about him enough to make the EVA get back up he was "assisted" by his opponent. Who grabbed his head and pulled him up. The creature was not however interested in being helpful as it grabbed the EVAs left arm and began to crush it.

"ARRGH."

"Shinji, that isn't your real arm."

The arm was crushed the hand and other parts beyond the crushed area hanging limp like a deflated balloon. However the creature wasn't done with him, a lance of energy showed up in the rear part of its arm and pulled back slightly before slamming forward at the EVAs right eye.

Shinji cried in pain clutching his own right eye as the lance kept slamming into the EVAs skull like a jackhammer. Eventually the inevitable happened and the lance pierced through the skull completely carrying the EVA with it into a building where it slumped blood spewing from both the front and back of the skull.

"The brain case has been penetrated! The EVA has gone silent." Maya informed them.

The crew looked on wondering what they were going to do now, when the impossible happened. EVA Unit 01 reactived on its own.

"It has broken the main control valve. We've lost control of it."

"It's a beserker!"

And so it seemed the EVA was completely out of their control. As it pulled itself up the armor around the jaw cracked and is mouth was unsealed as it roared a battlecry of challenge at its opponent. It ran towards it opponent in full run but was stopped as it slammed into a wall of energy. This however did not seem to truly phase the EVA as it lifted and repaired its left arm. It then brought both of its now functional hands together at what sort of the center of the AT field and seemed to grip it.

"It neutralizing the phase variance. It's breaking through!"

The EVA tore the AT field open with ridiculous ease and proceeded to throttle its opponent driving it to the ground. It tried smashing its opponents core with its fists however they seemed to be less then effective. Apparently realizing this it tore one of the spikes located around its opponent's core and proceeded to use that to damage the core. Realizing that it was in trouble his opponent seemed to decide to at least take the Eva with it as it seemed to become liquidy and engulfed the EVA in a ball before self-destructing. The bridge crew felt sorry for the boy, then they picked up some movement. Evangelion strided out of the conflagration of flames caused by the self-destruct almost entirely unscathed. Even Ritsuko showed shock over this development but the bridge crew was quick enough to get their wits about them to deploy recovery units.

Authors Notes: Another chapter finally out. Some will of course say I'm being to critical of Misato. I personally think she could use some criticism especially early on. Sho will be conscious again in the next chapter but won't see combat duty for a while yet. I'm trying to stick with doing this even though it is not particularly easy and I'm not sure when I'll get the next chapter out. Until then, Ja ne.
