For those of you who don't already know, I'm David 'Desaix' Tatum.
Author of the following ongoing fics:
Ranma: Return of the Sisters
Ranma: Three Souls, One Heart
Patlabor: Personal Files
Ushio and Tora: Discoveries
Princess Mononoke: Untitled
Slayers: Titled
Voltron: The Alliance is Dead, Long Live the Alliance
Patlabor: You're in Charge
DBZ: A Thousand Years Until Revenge
Irresponsible Captain Tylor: Tylor's Fury
Kenshin: Guide in the Wilderness
KOR: The Rebel Esper
And I may have forgotten a fic or two.
However, I haven't shown any demonstrable work on these fics for almost
a full year now. There's been a very good reason for that -- I haven't
worked on them.
It was initially intended to be a short, two or three month break from
fanfiction to concentrate on a (still ongoing) original work I was
hoping to try and write for eventual professional publication. I was
planning to get back into my fanfics starting in late september, and
then go on alternating between a chapter for my original work and a
chapter for a fanfic.
It didn't work out that way. On September 30th, my father passed away.
I was living at home, with him and my mother, while I finished college,
and his death was a massive blow to our entire family. Since then, I've
been working out the sale of his massive (roughly 15,000 books, we
finally concluded -- about half again the size we thought it was) book
collection, preparing for a move into a new house, and setting up my new
home.
I couldn't even hook up my computer because, along with moving, we threw
away much of our furniture (which really needed to be replaced anyway),
and had more new furniture custom-built to replace it. This included my
computer desk, and so I had nothing on which I could set up my system...
not counting a laptop, which doesn't have any of my fanfics loaded onto
it. (Nor does it have any kind of disk drive outside of a CD, so I
couldn't even load up my backups)
Now, things are slowly getting back to normal. I haven't finished
unpacking from the move, but I've got my computer set up. I now have a
new e-mail address, thanks to Philip Mak and the Anifics team, to
replace my old account (which I could only send mail from by dialing in
at a long-distance number), high-speed internet access (Cablemodem,
because even though I'm within fifteen minutes driving time to AOL and
UUNet's main headquarters in Virginia, I can't get DSL. Which is at
least better then people about five miles away, who can't even get cable
modem! I also am not too pleased with the service -- we only get one
e-mail address, which my mom claimed, so I had to find a new one of my
own -- but it's about the only option I've got), and access once again
to my fanfics. I've still got a few bugs to work out -- I have a
problem with a firewall (which I've traced to my network router's
hardwired firewall -- it automatically resets to its default settings
every ten minutes or so) which prevents me from using FTP, IRC, and a
few other features which I use for anime fanfiction. I'll have to
replace the router, and there are still tons of things to do around the
house, but I should slowly be able to get back into my fanfics again.
Which is why I've sent this notice out today -- to let you all know I'm
back (if in a slightly diminished capacity), that I've got a new e-mail
address at desaix@anifics.com (e-mail sent to my old address at
desaix@sysnet.net will still be recieved for a month or so... or however
long it is until the time I've already paid for runs out. I'll only
check it about once every few days, though). I can't change the address
on my web page until I fix that firewall problem, and it'll probably
still be a few days until I can do that, but I'll soon make the update.
And then, it'll be back to my fanfics. (Hmm, now, which one to work on,
first?)
