Chapter 2 : Who am I? Where am I?

< > actions, sounds

* * thoughts

[ ] Telepathic communication

Dr. Ritsuko Akagi didn't hold much in superstitions, omens, or the weather in general unless somehow it directly affected her in a way she couldn't ignore. Thus she didn't consider the downpour as anything more then a hindrance that would make it more difficult to get to work. Her normal thoughts were cut short as she noticed a figure lying on the ground. As she approached she noticed it was a boy about Shinji's age and that he was lying in a pool of his own blood with rather extensive injuries. Blood that was diluted into a pinkish color by the rain, as it flowed, collecting with the water in a nearby storm drain.

Ritsuko's heart went out to him, *So young. He needs medical help now. The local hospital isn't really properly equipped and he doesn't have enough time remaining for me to try and search it out. I need to get him to NERV's medical facilities.*

Picking him up she raced to her car being careful not aggravate any of his rather extensive injuries. Strapping him into the passenger seat she got into the driver's side and turned the key.

*Has it always taken this long. I don't have much time, if I don't hurry he could die of blood loss. Is the engine going to stall? Come on turn over.* Thousands of doubts assailed her in the span of a minute but they proved unfounded as the engine turned over and the vehicle proceeded with the purr of a well maintained engine.

Entering NERV Ritsuko showed uncharacteristic impatience with the ID scanner as she raced through NERV headquarters carrying the boy all the while. Suddenly bursting into the infirmary, the personnel there shocked temporarily into inaction by the sight of a exasperated Dr. Akagi. A glare quickly corrected this and they relieved Ritsuko of the child quickly getting to work saving his life.

"Who is this Dr Akagi? Do you have his previous medical records? We need to know his blood type before we can set up a transfusion." Asked a nameless aide.

"I don't know who he is or really anything about him for that matter, just use the O negative blood we have stockpiled for emergencies. That way no matter what his blood type, his body won't reject the transfused blood. Hurry up, I don't want him dying of blood loss while you dilly dally." Ritsuko exclaimed sending the aide and the rest of the staff scurrying into action.

Turning to get to her own work she said over he shoulder, "Run some tests to see if you can figure out who he is. I want a full report on your findings and his condition as soon as possible."

She went to her office and began working on the load of work she needed to do, however she kept being distracted by concern for the boy she had helped save this morning. Her distraction was sufficient that Maya commented on it.

"Sempai, what is troubling you? You are usually very concentrated on you work but you seem to be distracted today."

"Oh, its this boy I found.."

Maya cut her off her face a mixture of excitement and a not particularly well hidden disappointment, "Oh you have a boyfriend, with work and all I didn't think you had the time for that sort of thing Ritsuko. Is he cute?"

Ritsuko developed a sweatdrop and proceeded to facefault over the last comment.

"Did I say something wrong?"

Pulling herself up *What do you know facefaulting does hurt. Hey wait, I not in a anime that has facefaulting, so how could I facefault?* Author's perogative. *Oh.*

"No, no its this fourteen year old boy that.."

"That is scandalous Sempai it sounds like something Misato would do."

Ritsuko developed another sweatdrop but managed to not facefault this time, but it was close. "Maya let me finish my sentences it's nothing like that. When I was leaving for work I found this unconscious fourteen year old boy lying in a pool of his own blood with extensive injuries and decided that I needed to take him to NERV's infirmary. As the normal hospital doesn't have some of the things necessary to allow for him to be able to resume normal functioning in the foreseeable future. I'm just concerned whether he's ok."

"Oh, so I guess that report actually was for you."

Ritsuko's eye began to develop a slight twitch, "What report? Where is it?"

"Well I didn't want to disturb you and I didn't think you would have ordered up the report, so I.." Maya trailed off.

"Go on, what did you do with it?"

"I uhh sent it on to Commander Ikari." Maya played with her fingers and refused to make eye contact while saying this.

Ritsuko was about to pop a blood vessel over this development, "How long ago was this?"

"Oh just a few minutes ago.." Maya trailed off as she found she was talking to thin air. "I wonder what type of person he his."

--Asgard--

Urd's teasing had eventually died down and they had pulled up some lawn chairs beside the viewing pool. Presently munching on a tub of popcorn the two sisters were watching the antics their modification had caused.

"Ritsuko seems uncharacteristically emotionally involved. I thought you had decided no to put a geas on her."

Urd just smiled a mysterious smile, "Maybe I did and maybe I didn't, you won't know for sure will you? Don't forget her involvement with that one cat that died on her, some part of that is burned into her psyche and she doesn't want a repeat occurrence. Oh that reminds me how is Agito doing?"

--Hell, Level where really evil scum go to--

Agito was experiencing things that the words pain and torment were to weak to even begin to convey. That his torturer was just barely beginning to get warmed up meant whatever new terms Agito might come up for what he was experiencing would become insufficient soon enough.

--Asgard--

"Do you think that's just being a little to harsh."

Looking at each both sisters said "Naaaaaaah."

--NERV HQ--

Ritsuko raced down the halls hoping to intercept the courier before he reached Gendo's office. Luck however, was not with her. As she caught up only to find the courier had already delivered the report.

Hesitating before the door to Gendo's office she gathered her resolve and entered. The office was dark as always with the Kabbalist Tree on both the ceiling and floor. The sub-commander, however was uncharacteristically missing.

"Sir, I.."

Cutting her off Gendo spoke from behind clasped hands, "Have you read the report?"

"No, sir I haven't yet had the opportunity I.."

"The contents of this report are hereby classified, because of findings from the report it is obvious that this 'boy' is not even completely human. As your actions saved him he is now your responsibility. You will take care of him and ensure that SEELE doesn't gain information on him. Take this report, I expect your evaluation of how he can be of usefulness shortly after he recovers. Also know that his medical expenses will be coming out of your paycheck. That will be all."

--------

Ritsuko stood outside Gendo's office tears leaking out of her eyes.

*Why do you have to be such a cold-hearted bastard Gendo?* she asked herself.

--------

Slowly he regained awareness only to realize he didn't know who he was, where he was, or how he had got there. Looking around he noticed a blue haired girl lying in a adjacent bed covered with multiple bandages the most immediately obvious being one wrapped around her forehead and covering one of her eyes. The visible red eye looked at him with a unnatural intensity. Looking at himself he saw he had extensive bandages and various machines hooked up to him monitoring his vital signs.

Looking at her he asked in a voice raspy from disuse "Could you tell me who I am or where I am, miss?"

In a voice almost to quiet and soft to make out he heard her response, "You're at NERV." In a voice even quieter then before she added "You're like me."

Before he could ask her what she meant by that people came in wheeled her out leaving him with one last look at her as she passed through the doors. One of the nurses noticed him, "Oh, you're awake. I'll inform Dr Akagi at once."

She was off and the rest had left with the girl leaving him alone with his thoughts *What did she mean that I was like her? Is there something special about me?* He pondered this and what this Dr Akagi person might look like. His musing were cut off as a rather professional looking woman entered the room.

"How are you feeling today?"

"Fine I guess but I can't really remember anything to compare my present state to. Can you tell me who I am.. or was?"

"So can you remember anything?"

"Not before waking up here I try to think back, reach for some memory but there is nothing there."

Sensing his frustration the lady didn't push him more about it. "We couldn't find anything on who you were but for now you my responsibility. Hello I am Akagi Ritsuko but you can call me mama-san." She held out her hand.

He took it "Ok, Mama-san."

"Well I need to come up with a name to call you at least for the time being. As you will be my adoptive son your family name will of course be Akagi, but what should I call you?. You look like a Sho. How does that sound Akagi Sho?"

"Thank you Mama-san. What is going to happen now?"

Ritsuko glanced once more over his chart.

"Well your responding well to rather well to treatment and we should be able to have you up and moving in a matter of days."

"What happened to me?"

"I don't know Sho, I was hoping you could tell us. Don't worry I'll be back in as soon as I finish with work."

Sho felt good inside it was as if a unsatisfied emptiness was finally being taken care of. (1)

--------

Gendo summoned her back into his office to give her initial report Looking at her behind glasses that glowed despite the lack of light for them to be reflecting, his face behind his steepled hands he awaited her report.

"He doesn't remember anything. Despite their best effort of the teams and the Magi to try and to figure out where he came from or who he was, we have come up with nothing."

If she had expected a reaction out of Gendo for the failure of his teams or the Magi to find any information either in a smirk at confirmation of his apparent suspicions or disappointment at their failure, she was disappointed.

"How do you think he can be of usefulness to us?"

"Well as we are trying to keep SEELE from knowing about him I thought we could make him my assistant. That way I can keep an eye on him and do testing right under SEELE's nose."

Again there was no reaction not even to a person who was willing to be generous about it. Ritsuko didn't let the pause carry on to long lest the Commander get annoyed at her.

"I need to do some further testing that can only be done while he is conscious in order to verify but he strikes me as bright enough he could actually help in the tech division and if those special nerve clusters are taken advantage of, he would be a good candidate for piloting an Evangelion."

"Excellent. You will proceed to conduct testing on his ability to pilot an Evangelion as soon as he recovers enough to do so. You will conduct the Sync test in Unit 0. What are your findings on the nerve clusters on his back?"

"They hook up to the spinal cord and appear to be designed to help him control so kind of weapon or mecha system. The material they are made out of is rather unique. It has properties of both organic and inorganic matter and is quite durable. We can not find out more about how they work until he has recovered enough."

"Do you foresee any possible dangers when he would sync with an Evangelion. It would not be beyond SEELE to pull such a move even though it would be to their disadvantage at this time."

"I highly doubt it, sir. That material is unlike anything we have ever come across before."

Silence ensued. Realizing that Gendo had no further questions for her Ritsuko slipped out. It had been a taxing week worrying as Sho healed enough to regain consciousness. The infirmary personnel had informed her that he was recovering at an abnormally high rate but that his injuries were extensive enough that her quick actions had saved his life but it would still be some time before he would regain mobility.

*Sigh* what was it about being called mama-san that warmed her heart so?

--------

Maya Ibuki had periodically been coming in and seeing how the boy Sempai had saved was doing. She was surprised to see that he was awake.

"Hello there how are you doing?"

Looking at her from extensive enough bandages that he almost resembled a mummy he shrugged his shoulders as much as the bandages would allow, "Mama-san said I would be able to be moving around in a few days."

Maya suppressed a giggle at how the boy looked wrapped up as he was. Then something he said caught up to her *Mama-san? I thought they weren't able to identify who he was or where he came from. So who could he be talking about? *

Sitting on the bed she asked, "So what is your name?"

"Akagi Sho."

Maya proceeded to fall off the bed and facefault.

*That probably hurts. Why did she do that? *

*Note to self: facefaulting does in fact hurt. * Pulling herself up "So who is your mother?"

"Akagi Ritsuko is adopting me as I am her responsibility."

"Oh I'm Ibuki Maya and I'm her personal assistant."

"I'm pleased to meet you. Mama-san said she would come by when she was done with her work."

*That report she was delivering to Commander Ikari must have delayed her she should be here right about now. * "Don't worry I'm sure she will be along shortly."

Ritsuko chose that moment to come in. "Oh hello Maya. I assume you have been getting aquatinted with Sho?"

"Oh yes, he has is very polite."

"Well you don't need to have him detain you I'll keep him company."

With that Maya decided to leave and allow the adoptive mother and child strengthen their bond.

To be continued.

Author's notes: Finally, this chapter is done. The enhanced healing is slight intervention from the unit but it isn't enhancing his healing factor by that significant a factor. The next chapter is going to have a slightly longer delay as this one was already in the rough draft stage when I posted the first one. Sho won't be able to access his unit for some time yet. I intend to work some more on strengthening characters and relationships between them before I continue on which means if you came for battle sceens you will have to wait a while for me to get there. I'm using the Japanese name reversal in dialog but not in text if enough people tell me they don't like this I might change it.

1) Sho Fukamachi's Mother died when he was young, and his father often didn't have enough time for him. His father was the first to be turned into a weapon to try to kill him so there is a emptiness.
