The only time in the manga that Ranma says anything about not fighting girls
is when he fights Konatsu. I think we can call that a gag on Takahashi's
part. Otherwise, there's not a single example to show even the slightest
reluctance to fight somebody simply because they are female. Shampoo,
Kodachi, Rouge, Kiima...hmm...who else is there? Anyway, the "I don't fight
girls." thing is a fanfic cliche, along with all the others. "It's a
martial artists duty to protect the weak!","My Honor is All.","I eat only
Twinkies for breakfast.", etc.. Sometimes you have to actually stop and
think about the things that are so common in fanfics yet never show up in
the original series. Otherwise it's hard to keep all the garbage seperate.
^_^;
Actually, the part about 'the martial artist's duty...' is cannon. Check out the first apperance of the ghost cat, what's his name, Mao Yon or something? Genma says it pretty clearly... although I could be mistaken...
--Hm. I don't have the scans on this computer, otherwise I'd check. I'll take your word for it. Regardless, I meant more along the lines of the common idea in fanfics where Ranma gets frustrated at the people around him because they ruin the 'purity' of the art he so dedicates to protecting the weak--that he studies for the sole purpose of being Protecter of Innocents the World Over. It's... well, it's out there, as far as lines of reasoning go.
--And another point...you mention that Genma, of all people, says that it's a martial artist's duty to protect the weak. Well. Genma isn't exactly known for stating the truth. Neither is Ranma, or Nabiki, or Cologne. So I'd take what any of them say with a huge canister of salt. :)
