There are no 'rules' (there isn't an English
version of French and Spanish bureaucracy to 
keep the language and usage 'pure'. ^_+)

Frankly it comes down to whatever works in a story, which in
turn is determined by the readers.  If the author doesn't
makes something work in a story (use of pronouns, for example)
then the readers won't read the story. Always keep in mind that
C&C is *only* a personal opinion. (However if 3+ critics
object to the same thing, then it might be time to rethink
the way the story is written.)
