Well, remember the girls are also standing in for the Three Musketeers.
Ryoko here would probably be the equivalent of Porthos, which, before
joining the Musketeers, was a pirate. He was the most rowdy and
dirty-fighting of the musketeers, but he still retained their basic
honor. Dueling was a very strong custom, and he was still a gentleman -
only villainous thieves without honor would kill a man in cold blood
outside of a duel.
