I'm not sure this Usagi would distance herself to protect Naru. It's pretty
much established that they both enjoy causing trouble as it is and don't
particularly care whose toes they step on.
She probably wouldn't try and, if she did, this Naru wouldn't let her.
She sounds like a pretty good coach and instructor so far.

of the team and training up her replacement will be a growing

It's odd that her first reaction to some as yet unknown problem would
be to call a lawyer.
Think about it. This is a police captain's kid. One of their own. It's not
going to take them long to find out that Ami was the last person he had
contact with. They're going to want to talk to her.
I don't think Usagi realizes yet that it's about Shinohara. She might
be able to figure it out, but the evidence is thin.
I can see the interview. "I wasn't there when the wolf attacked him
because I had just dashed across Tokyo and up the outside of the
tallest building I could find."
The last scene in this chapter is after the investigation probably
closed, but some conscientious police officer trying to figure out
what that blur on several security cameras along her route was would
have been interesting.
It will be interesting to see how she accomodates her
responsibilities as Spiderwoman to those of a senshi if she does get
tapped as Sailor Mercury.
Being tapped as Sailor Mercury might be the only thing that saves her.
True. From herself if nothing else; she's carrying a lot of angst.
I just noticed another small nit:
"This is the journal of Ami Mizuno, to be published in the event of my death.
I have been more {then : than} a month in the preparation for my purpose. For my
atonement of the act of cowardice that cost Gendo Shinohara his life.
It's unlikely she'll think of it through her angst, but it is very
likely that if she's stayed, there would have been two fatalities.
Perhaps Usagi will point this out to her once they realize what the
beast was. It might help a very little.
