THE UNMASKING PART III

CHAPTER 3 : A BLANK STARE, BUT THOSE EYES ARE HIDING
SOMETHING

Ryoko opened her eyes, immediately squinting against
the bright sunlight and yawned, <What a weird dream!>
She took a quick survey of her situation, and looked
around the room, identifying it as Tenchi's. She was
above Tenchi's bed, above Tenchi himself. <And it's
eleven in the morning, why isn't he to school yet.
Maybe I should wake him up.> Ryoko shook her love,
"Tenchi...., Tenchi...., Tenchi....."

He stirred in his sleep. "Mmm.....go away. I'm
sleepin'."

The former space pirate, not to be deterred by this
simple request, not put off in the least, switched to
putting her palms against his chest, and pushing down
a few times. His body began oscillating along with
the bed springs, "Tenchi, time to get up. Rise and
shine buttercup! You missed school and everything."

The young prince defiantly tossed around a few times,
dislodging her hands, "It's not time, let me sleep."

Laughing, she grabbed the sheets and pulled them off
of him, "Tenchi! Time to get up and *play* with me."

At this final intrusion, he groggily opened his eyes
and slowly sat up, "Ryoko! Why'd you do that, I'm
really tired."

His playmate-to-be looked at him funny, "You got to
bed at ten at night. How much sleep do you need?
Anyway, you missed school today. So now can spend
time with me." Secretly she was hoping to get Tenchi
to spend some time with her *alone.*

Tenchi turned his head toward the alarm clock, "Dad
let me stay home today."

She went slackjawed, "Let you stay home? What do you
mean?"

Tenchi turned over to his side, facing away from her.
Yawning again, "He woke me up over some stupid photos.
I think he felt guilty and let me take the day off
school or something."

Suddenly frozen, she was momentarily paralyzed at the
sudden revelation, <Just like in the dream.>

"Tenchi?"

"Yes, Ryoko," came an annoyed reply.

"What were those photos of?" she inquired.

"When I was three or so my Grandma helped me put on
make-up to look like I was the walking dead or
something. For a costume festival. Dad got delirious
and thought it was for real."

"Hmph, sounds scary, I'd like to see them. Where are
they?"

Tenchi reply muffled into his pillow, "Dad gave them
to me, I destroyed them."

<None of that was a dream then. But I woke up and
everything was so normal again.> Deciding to keep on
pressing, the cyan haired girl demanded, "How did you
do that?"

The young Masaki tensed for a second before relaxing,
"With a lighter."

"In this room?"

Tenchi nodded his head against the pillow, and
affirmed sounding seriously irked "Yes!"

Ryoko started going through the shelves, his desk and
personal belongings before needling anymore, "Wheres
the lighter, Tenchi?"

Angered by the seemingly useless pestering he rattled
out, "I DON'T KNOW!"

She didn't know exactly what she was doing, nor why,
but resolved on badgering him, "Do you even have a
lighter, Tenchi?"

The young man thrashed around in the bed, "Yeah,
somewhere."

She pouted innocently, "Then where is it? I could use
it."

Tenchi growled out, "How the hell am I supposed to
know, let me sleep!"

The spiky haired woman jumped back at the tone of his
voice, <He's getting mad. I heard his instructions to
himself, Washu, and Nobuyuki. He really didn't put
any detail how he would destroy the photos. Why is he
getting so mad?>

The prince flipped over in his mattress again but
became more placid, "I'm sorry Ryoko, I'm just tired."

She quieted, not asking anything anymore, and watched
him transfixed. Tenchi seemed too drained to pay
attention to her, and was out like a light five
minutes later.

She sat in the chair of his desk, turning the
situation over in her mind, viewing it from various
angles, not an activity that she partook of
frequently. However, with everything she learned that
morning, it was required. <There are two Tenchis or
three (looking over to where Tenchi was sleeping now).
One likes me. One likes Ayeka. They both hate
Tsunami, Tokimi, whoever she is, and aren't fond of
Yosho. Not fond of Yosho, maybe the one, the other
one sounds like they are going to kill him. They like
Nobuyuki. Tenchi really didn't mention his mom. I
don't know about Mihoshi, but they seem to have no
interest in her, other than as an agent? For some
reason, they wanted an "alliance" with Washu. And the
scariest part was that the Tenchis talked about dying.
I don't know why. Why does this have to be so damn
frustrating.>

A period of time passed, but no matter how much she
tried to make sense out of it, she couldn't make the
pieces of this puzzle fit. Letting Tenchi and her
mind have a rest, the cat-eyed woman phased herself
down to the lower floor of the house, into the
kitchen.

A big smile formed as she saw Sasami bustling about,
keeping herself busy as always, she greeted, "Hey
there, Kiddo!"

The child smiled up at her, "Hi Ryoko! You missed
breakfast, Tenchi did too."

The former space pirate whimpered, "Did you leave
anything for me?"

The small princess's cheerful face drooped, "Not
really. I'm sorry, Tenchi's dad is staying home
today. And well.... him and Washu woke up about an
hour ago and ate the all the left-overs." She
snickered, "And they ate a lot!"

Ryoko silently nodded, <It definitely was not a damn
dream.> "That's ok. I'll just catch lunch."

The little chef let her smile brighten up again and
happily went back to cleaning up the kitchen. Chores
were efficiently done, and as time's sands pass the
little princess became more reserved. Silently, she
put the dishes away and wiped the counter surface
before speaking up again, "Ryoko?"

The one who was addressed, was sitting on the table
brooding, "Yes, Sasami."

The little princess's smile had long faded, and she
audibly gulped before whispering, "Is Tenchi Ok?"

Cyan hairs swayed as her head snapped up, "Why do you
ask?"

Sasami placed her soiled dish rag on the now spotless
counter, and started paying rapt attention to her
hands, "Y-you see, this morning, Washu and Tenchi's
dad were in his room. And I heard him say things to
Washu. He sounded really, really mad, almost like he
hated her."

Ryoko remained pensive, actively trying to find a way
out of this, <No, play stupid with her. At least for
now.> "Maybe Tenchi was just in a bad mood or
something," She hoped Sasami's sullen mood could be
soothed over by joking, "I kinda noticed first hand
he's not a morning person."

The blue-haired girl kicked the floor a few times,
seemingly hesistant about saying the wrong thing.
Ryoko took a note of this and tried to draw her little
friend out some more, "Is there something else wrong,
Sasami?" The second princess of Jurai nodded bleakly,
opened her mouth several times and quickly shut it
closed again. The cat-tailed pirate, anxious to hear
what Sasami had wanted to say, prompted her, "Hey,
it's only me and you here. What's the matter?" Tears
well up in the distressed girl's eyes and she ran over
to Ryoko for a hug. The ultimately soft hearted
pirate reciprocated the hug fiercely, and patted her
on the back, "Sasami, what is it? You know you can
tell me anything."

The little girl's tears subsided, composure regained a
bit, the girl confided, "Me and Ayeka went back to our
rooms. But I really couldn't sleep..... I got up...
maybe five minutes later. Tenchi talks to me a lot if
I feel bad. So.... I wanted to talk to him to make
him feel better. I thought maybe I'd ask him what he
wants for breakfast.... I would have asked him,
Washu, and his dad too, but when I got to the
door.....," she stopped again, wiping at reddened
puffy eyes.

Ryoko nodded sagely, <I couldn't get out, obviously
she couldn't get in.> "What happened when you got to
the door?"

Sasami chewed her bottom lip and blushed in slight
embarrassment, "I listened to the door to see if they
were still talking. But I didn't hear anybody. It
was really weird, because I didn't hear them leave
yet. When I knocked on the door, no one even
answered." She looked away and her confidant tousled
her hair to show she understood. Reassured again, the
young chef of the household continued on, "I-I-I
opened the door anyway."

Ryoko tried her damnedest not to look astounded, <She
managed to open the door!> "Go on." Sasami
apparently found her hands very interesting again.
"Sasami, whatever it was, it can't be so bad," Ryoko
lied, needing to know exactly what happened.

When the child spoke again she did so very slowly and
in hushed tones, "I opened the door to Tenchi's room.
I was kind of surprised to see that Washu and Tenchi's
dad weren't there. But Tenchi was there in his bed
sleeping, I think. The room felt really strange. I
know it sounds weird but it just didn't... oh, I don't
know..... it didn't feel like his room."

Ryoko tried not to look puzzled, <What the hell is
going on here, she never got into his room while I was
awake, it must've been much more than five minutes
then.>

The normally cheerful princess's frown deepened
further, "I went up to Tenchi anyway. I thought he
was wearing a white shirt and black boxers when me and
Ayeka went to his room this morning. But he was
wearing a black shirt."

Sasami's confidant bowed her head very slightly, <He
was wearing a white shirt and black boxers. I just
left his room, what five minutes ago?>

"I tried to wake him up, so he can get ready for
school and everything. It was still a little early
and he must've just gotten back in bed, but I was
going to make him his choice of breakfast to make up
for it. I tried waking him up but he wouldn't get up.
I tried shaking him but he still wouldn't wake up."
Sasami scooted closer to Ryoko and lowered her voice
even further, "I got real scared, like he was dead or
something. I jumped on the bed, and shook him hard
but he still didn't move. He was snoring a little bit
the entire time but it was very creepy. I put my hand
over his mouth and I felt his breath. But then,
I....." She turned her head away.

Ryoko, morbidly curious, leaned over, "Then what
Sasami?" Her large pink eyes glazed over, "I don't
know..... I really wanted him to wake up...... I
opened his eyes, and ......"

Sasami looked fearfully up at her surrogate sister,
"and it was his eyes, kind of..... But it was like
nothing was there. It sounds stupid....., but they
were completely blank, like from a dead body. I was
really scared, really really scared, and ran out of
the room.... I wanted to get a glass of water to
splash him with..... anything that would wake him
up..... so I went into the bathroom and filled up a
glass. By the time I got back in the hallway, I heard
his dad and Washu leaving the room. I heard Tenchi's
dad give him the day off school to sleep. And when I
heard Tenchi say OK to it, I knew he was OK then, so
I went downstairs to make breakfast." Sasami quieted
back down.

<So it must really have been five minutes.> Smiling
at her, Ryoko petted the girl's arm and asked,
"Anything else, Sasami? Did you tell anyone else
about this?"

She vigorously shook her head, "I wanted to tell
Ayeka, but I think she was kind of upset over seeing
Tenchi so mad this morning. I didn't want to think
about it, and made breakfast. Washu and father didn't
show up till later. I heard them both say they wanted
to sleep, so everything else was normal. The only ones
who showed up was Grandpa, Ayeka, and even Mihoshi. I
went up to Tenchi's room around an hour ago." Sasami
smiled came back in full force, a mischievous glint
lighted up her eyes, and she giggled, "I saw you were
sleeping over him so I kind of left you two alone."
She grinned conspiratorily at Ryoko, "And I didn't
tell Ayeka that, either."

The woman in the gold and blue striped dress laughed
heartily, "That's good, or there would have been
another battle in Tenchi's room today!" The little
princess frowned, "Another battle?"

Ryoko coughed, <damn!>, and finished rather lamely,
"I meant.... nothing."

Lost in her own thoughts, the little chef reflected,
"I think he was wearing a white shirt again when I
looked in at you two." She began to shake at the
unpleasant memory, crossed her arms to still her
frame, while those large rose-colored eyes became
distant.

"Is there anything else?"

Long blue ponytails bounced up and down, while their
owner murmured, "This wasn't the first time."

Her friend grimaced, "What wasn't the first time?"

The little princess gasped, "Oh, I meant with Tenchi's
room. There were a couple of other times when his
room felt..... weird. And when it did..... he was
almost always there..... and always in bed. Sleeping,
snoring lightly..... and........ that I couldn't wake
him up. It was..... different times of the day.....,
not just in the morning.. But....... today was the
first time I looked into his eyes."

Ryoko strained her face to manage a smile, directed at
her little friend, "I'm sure it's nothing." <Now
that's a lie.>

Sasami gave her bigger friend another hug, "Thanks
Ryoko, I feel a lot better now that I talked to you.
Please don't tell anyone else especially Ayeka, OK?"

"Of course Sasami." <Not that I would right now
anyway.>

An idea suddenly popped in Ryoko's calculating mind,
"Sasami, what is Ayeka's favorite meal?"

Ayeka's little sister furrowed her brows together, "I
don't know. My big sister likes almost everything i
cook."

The pirate pursed her lips together in determination,
<I need to make sure of some things, but I'd rather
not ask Sasami.> "Could you tell me where your
sister's hiding?

Sasami happily supplied, "I think she's out by the
Funaho tree. Can you tell Ayeka that lunch will be
done ready around one." The junior chef ran back into
the kitchen to start at another task.

Ryoko thanked her little informant and flew out of the
house onto the rooftop to give herself time to ponder
over some things.

After making a few feeble attempts to think things
through, Ryoko gave up. Nothing made sense to her and
any scenario explaining what she saw proved to be
inconclusive so she flitted the time away waiting for
an hour to pass, to be alone in case anything in the
form of an idea hit her, though none did. So she sat
there, counting the shingles away.

Tiring with the counting game, mostly that she had to
start over and over again, Ryoko gazed up at the sun,
and the cat-eyed woman saw over an hour had passed,
she decided she needed to visit a certain someone and
took off flying.

A few minutes later she landed at the edge of the
pond. The day was sunny and bright, with the small
lake reflecting the image of the massive former
spaceship tree. Ayeka was there, as expected, sitting
at the base, reading a book. She was in her usual
lavender highlighted kimono. Ryoko was about to take
a step onto one of the stones when she remembered the
one Tenchi's words "Funaho won't talk as long as we
feed her energy and can threaten her existence. Yosho
is kept in the dark by Funaho's lies, some memory
blocks and changes, and his own stupidity."

<Maybe we shouldn't talk around that tree.> Ryoko
casually strolled over to the princess, stepping on
the stones lightly, even though she could just as well
walk on the water. She smirked, "Hello there, your
highness. Watcha reading?"

Ayeka scowled over her book, a romance novel, "Nothing
much Ryoko."

Ryoko grinned, <I need her to get away from that
tree.> "Nothing much, indeed. What's that title?
'Inflamed Passions of the Heart', oh how precious."
Remembering the reason she came in the first place,
became serious, "Ayeka, I'd like to speak to you
about something."

Ayeka curtly retorted, "Then speak demon."

The pirate's growl died in her throat, <Royal bitch!>.
"Could we actually take a walk."

The first princess sighed, "I guess, you won't leave
me alone until we do so."

Ryoko guffawed, "Of course not."

Ayeka gathered her up kimono and slowly stood up. She
slid the novel into her pocket and eyed her rival, not
only in love, but it seemingly in all areas of their
shared life. "You had better make this quick."

The spiky hair waved as its owner somberly gave a
short nod and started walking on the small islands of
stone that led back ashore.

Ayeka studied her intently, wondering why Ryoko seemed
so reserved all of a sudden, before she followed.

They were walking along the beaten path, not quite
side by side for about five minutes. The first
princess of Jurai was starting to get annoyed, until
Ryoko finally spoke up, "Ayeka?"

"Yes, Ryoko," Ayeka replied, biting back a scathing
retort.

Ryoko mused for a few seconds, "What's your favorite
food?"

She stared at the pirate, perplexed by the question
and walked past her, "I don't know, I don't really
have a preference."

Ryoko immediately launched into her next question, "Is
it something called Oshimara?"

Ayeka spun around on her rival, "How did you know
that?"

Her rival's lips peeled back, showing bared fangs,
<Got her!>, "Oh it's something that your little
precious sister told me."

The plum haired princess frowned at her, "She doesn't
even know I like it." Ryoko put on a bored
expression, "Why not, is it something disgusting?"

"No, it's just very fattening. Sasami would cook it
if she knew it was my favorite, and probably cook it
too much." Ayeka kept herself from replying, <And she
would probably use that, and every and anyother chance
she got to get her hands on more of my jewelery
collection.>

Her tormentor yawned, <How very interesting.>,
"Actually Princess, I just wanted to know what your
real hair color is?"

The elder princesses's scowl deepened, "And just what
do you mean?"

Ryoko just laughed out loud, having the sound echo
throughout the forest, "Everyone knows that hair is so
fake. DNA conversion correct?"

Ayeka could not help but blush, "How did you come by
this information may I ask?" <What game is this
monster playing now?>

The interrogator tilted her head up toward the sky,
contemplatively studying various cloud shapes , "Oh I
don't know. So what's the real hair color?"

Sasami's older sister paused, unconsciously stroking
her violet hair, "It was blue like Sasamis. I changed
it for my Brother Yosho. He considered his mother the
ideal woman, so I got darker hair like she had."

Ryoko jibed, "Lots of good that did ya, didn't it,"
but the facade of her mirth only covered a terrified
soul, <Everything the two Tenchis said is turning out
to be true.>

Her easily riled victim managed to cooly ignore the
callous comment, crossing her arms and tapping her
foot impatiently to show she had little time for these
mind games.

The cyan haired woman had only a few more questions to
ask, "Did you have any close childhood friends or
somebody who watched you a lot? Someone you heard was
really old, like over 10,000 years old."

Ayeka creased her brows together, <What is up with her
today?> "Why do you want to know?"

The interviewer shrugged her shoulders leaving the
princess feeling tormented by the inane questions.

She reconsidered, being frank would get this mundane
ordeal over with, "Not that I know of..... Sasami and
I were playmates. Our chaperones changed constantly."
She smiled triumphantly, seeing that the questioner
looked stumped for once.

<Huh, nothing useful there. One last question....>
"What is the chet'ere?"

Ayeka stopped in middle of the path, her tone flat and
even, "It's a Jurai custom."

She simply stated it, her voice unreadable. Ryoko
wheeled around unexpectedly and the two women were
face to face, "And what is this precious custom?
Hmmm...."

Ayeka smirked, <Finally, I can get the upperhand
here.>, "Nothing really. Only the nobles and royalty
of Jurai really even know of it. We may not speak so
freely of it." With that she passed Ryoko, fully
intending to ignore the puzzling conversation and go
on to do something more pleasant with her time.

Right when she was nine or ten steps away, Ryoko
called after her, "Hey, does it involve cutting your
wrist and draining blood in a goblet." <Heh, that
stopped the prissy princess, alright.> Floating
closer, she added for good measure, "And you give
someone a ring made of your own blood or something
like that."

Slight laughter echoed teasingly in the ex-pirate's
ears, "No you idiot. You got it half-right.... I
would correct you, but I don't even believe it's worth
wasting my time."

<Tenchi wasn't correct?> "Actually could you tell me
what part I got wrong?"

For once, her voice held some measure of sincerity
instead of mockery, and for that reason Ayeka gave the
request consideration. Her memory digging up training
from very long ago, Ayeka could practically envision
the customs book in front of her, and started reciting
and commenting on the relevant parts of the passage,
"Well, first off Chet'ere is a very old custom, it's
hardly done these days. The word is ancient Jurain
for 'bloodletting.' Mostly initiated by a nobleman
asking for a noblewoman's hand in marriage. It shows
utmost trust and love for the Lady involved. The
noble cuts his wrist into a very large goblet,
bleeding until the Lady tells him to stop. If his
wound stops bleeding before asked to do so, he has to
keep cutting himself. Long ago some noblemen actually
died of blood loss since their Ladies never told them
to stop. When they are told to stop, they then may
offer the goblet to the Lady. If she says no, it's
seen as a utter rejection of the man. If she accepts,
he may pour it on the roots of her space tree. This
step is symbolic in that he is willing to take pain in
order to spare her any, and his loyalty to her. Then
he may present an engagement ring, made of his space
tree's sap to the Lady. If she accepts the ring, it
gives her a link to his tree, and he recieves her hand
in marriage. If she doesn't accept that part, it
isn't a total rejection, but he would have to wait a
period of time before asking her again."

Her tempory student's eyes were glazed over, "So you
mean all I got wrong was what the ring would be made
of."

Flustered at the dismissal of her precise account of
the custom, the elder princess spat out, "Is that all
for today, Ryoko?"

Apparently not, as the questions kept coming, "Did you
ever tell Tenchi any of this?" Seeing her housemate's
confused expression, Ryoko groaned, "Your hair,
Oshimara, Chet'ere?"

"No, it never even crossed my mind." As some sort of
relization came, so did the need for an explanation,
"How did you know, did my little sister tell you about
my hair or this custom?"

<Ayeka doesn't sound too happy. I wouldn't want to
get Sasami in trouble. What lie should I tell her.>
Suddenly Ryoko had her usual mischievous grin
plastered on her face, as she spoke her next words
were very high pitched, "No Little Ayeka. Your *MOMMY*
did, when she was here, before you came down to cry
MOMMY MOMMY and get hugged by her, again and again and
again." Ryoko started laughing annoyingly loud and
Ayeka, cursing her mother and her tormentor, made her
way back to the house.

Watching her leave, the pirate wondered, <What do I
do. Everything was pretty much correct. Who do I
turn to? What the hell is going on?> Briefly
thoughts of different people flickered through her
mind, while she sat herself on the grass on the side
of the trail.

Obviously not the one she just interviewed. <Hi
Ayeka, there are two Tenchis, don't ask. One loves
me. One loves you. They both hate Tsunami's guts.>
An image of Ayeka popped up, <Demon! I'll make you
pay for your lies.> A million logs start floating
about, zapping her. Ryoko couldn't blame her, she'd
do basically the same if it was Ayeka telling her
this.

Certainly not Nobuyuki. <Hi Tenchi's Dad, there are
two Tenchis. One loves me. One loves Ayeka. One of
them hates your father-in-laws guts. I don't know
why, not that I care. They also hate......> An image
of Tenchi's dad interrupted her last sentence, he was
shaking Tenchi to pieces, "Way to go son, you finally
are becoming a real man." <Obviously won't hear past
the love part.>

Definitely not Sasami. <Sasami, there are two
Tenchis. One loves me. One loves Ayeka. They both
hate Tsunami. Don't tell her, even though you two or
linked or something. Tenchi seems like he wants to
protect you.> An image of Sasami starting to cry went
through her mind. <Please stop crying Sasami, Tenchi
doesn't hate you, he only hates Tsunami..... which is
you..... or not.... crap...>

Probably not Yosho, <Hi Yosho. Or Lord Katsuhito or
whatever you want to be called these days you dirty
old man. Your grandson is actually two people I
think. One loves me, one loves your sister. One of
them hate you and are planning to destroy your life as
I understand it. How can you help?> An image of
Katsuhito popped up, sipping tea, "Ryoko, a student
once went to his Sensei asking 'Master, why do Trees
only bear fruit in certain seasons. Would it not be
better for them to provide fruit all year to feed
others.' To which the sensei replied, 'Their burdened
branches would indicate the state of their souls.'"
<Huh!? I guess that means swrew off and figure out
your own damn problems.> Another image of Katsuhito
popped up, "Damn straight, Ryoko." She got bonked
over the head by a wooden bokken.

For her own sanity, not Mihoshi, <Hi Mihoshi, there
are............ Mihoshi stop sleeping, damn it.>

Lastly, not Washu, <Washu or Little Washu or ugh... I
give up. There are two Tenchis. One loves me. One
loves Ayeka. They hate Tsunami, and somebody called
Tokimi. They want an alliance with you, why that is I
don't know. One wanted to kill you, and calmed down a
few minutes and all this thinking is really starting
to make my head hurt.> An image of Washu popped up,
finger tapping on her chin, deep in contemplation,
"Well my Little Ryoko. Lets analyze the situation,
shall we." The diminutive scientist started cackling
maniacally, "And while we're at it, let me tie you up
again for another night of torture. Tenchi too, since
he was considering to kill me, and he'll be naked as
punishment." Images of the sadistic little bitch
keeping her up all night with Tenchi entered her mind.
<Not that that would be too bad.>

Ryoko sighed, silently asking herself for the Nth time
that day, "What is going on?" She glanced up at the
sun, <Must be lunchtime.>

With that she got up and left for the house.
