Two things.

1) It's a story. The author is not obliged in any way to stick to reality.
Science fiction only does it to varying degrees. I won't open a can of worms
by bringing "Star Wars" into this too extensively but it's got a lot of
elements out of fantasy. (And ironically it brings in Gernsbackian hero
re-images.) Gibson's "Neuromancer", arguably the first real cyberpunk novel,
could be fairly easily reimaged as a fantasy story. (Matrix = astral space,
AI = elemental, holograms = illusion magic...) If the author says something
happens, it's possible in that story world for it to happen.

2) But, conversely, things happen for a reason. Everything has effects. I
think the effect of _this_ would be to erode trust between the Sabers and
the Phantom. If the author's aiming for that, great. If not, well...

Alternate plan that doesn't involve ticking realists off.

(Arguably, I could just say that GENOM has nothing for security but an
amazing tracing system, and that data heists function like bank heists - the
trick is not so much getting it as getting away with it.)

Sensor log, chomped by massively powerful analysis suite, reveal boomers
transmitting from point at base of neck. Phantom circles, gets better scan,
gets weak point confirmed.

Either tight-band transmission to Sabers of weak points, general broadcast
of weak points (because, really, GENOM is going to know they were
deliberately taken out anyway, and so what if some bystanders know GENOM's
boomers have a weak point? Factory recalls for everyone!) or just a very
deliberate shot to the brainstem with some weapon that previously wasn't
working and hope the Sabers catch on in time.

This is off-top-of-head stuff so there are probably some holes in it, but
the thing to consider always when writing is not what you do but _what_ what
you do _means_.

Also, why not open up on the big black suit of power armor when it's smacked
the Phantom across the room? Is it going to redirect the bullets?
