Actually, Cthulu is one of the second tier Gods. He's the main named god
because his mind, though asleep in the dreamless slumber, is the most active
in seeking out our minds in which to corrupt to his will. The strongest of
the elder gods are the three first tier gods called the triad or Grand ones.
(Can't remember exactly, I don't have my books out here on the ship.) These
three gods make up the three aspects of the universe. Their is a God(dess)
*not sure which* that is the emboyment of creation. From it all things
spring. Next is Azathoth, the destroyer. He destroys all the first one
creates. He is the embodyment of entropy. I wish I had my books so I could
remember the names of the other two of these but oh well. The last one is
considered the most important of the three, also the most uncaring of the
human plight. It is the embodyment of time. It is the balance that allows
the universe to exist in the chaotic harmony that it does. With out this
last Grand one, Azathoth would destroy whatever the other could create the
moment it was made and they would basically cancel each other out. With Time
added each creation is allowed an existance, be it however long or short,
before it is devowered by Azathoth.
Personally I think one of the harder ones should have been Yog S'Toth as it
is not only the gate keeper between the mortal world and the "other" but IS
in fact the gate itself as well. That's a lot of Mojo to have to go
against.
