That was Adam's failure with Rei. She controlled her animal self and stayed
human. And had she not failed to control the urges of the Violator, and
felt remorse for her failure to do so, would she have had the strength to do
so? For all her inhumaness, I think Rei may end up the one who learns the
most about being human. I do hope Asuka gets over herself soon and realizes
Anna is in love with her, and that she is "protesting too much" about having
had sex with a girl. The longer she keeps Shinji dangling, the more
complicated she makes everything.
For Asuka, it's more the 'I was raped' rather than 'I had sex with a girl'
as the issue at hand.
***Humm. From some of her commentary, she seems more upset about doing
anything with a girl, and that she enjoyed it. Now, I know rape is a
horribly violating experience, but Asuka is being a little too psychotic
about it, and from my veiwpoint, it's because she refuses to accept what
happened. Yes, Rei was overcome by the Violator's personality, but so was
Asuka. Asuka is refusing to acknowledge that she herself had been feeling
exactly those same urges, right up to thinking about sex with Rei right
before Rei showed up. Rei has acknowledged she was weak, but Asuka is still
denying that she had the same urges, and as she was the primary feeder on
the Violator, she had more of his *essence*, which was what called to Rei.
Yes, Rei was weak, but Asuka isn't willing to admit that Rei wasn't in
control of her actions, or that she herself wasn't in full command of
herself, or she would have escaped. She has just as much power as Rei, and
could have escaped, but the Violators essence overwhelmed her too. Rei has
accepted her responsibility, but Asuka isn't accepting hers.***
By the way, if you haven't guessed, Rei is my favorite from this story.
She's the ultimate outcast trying to fit it. She has everything I used to
like so much about Illyana Rasputin, a truly dark side she has rejected,
and
Ahh, yes, I remember Ilyana, before her continuity was completely
destroyed. ^^;;;
***Yes. I nearly cried at the ending of Inferno. Then they took her and
made her a travesty and finaly killed her off. I was ready to kill when
Daytripper showed up as 'Magick'***
constantly has to fight against, yet the very struggle not to give in has
made her far more human in ways than anyone gives her credit for. She
chose to stay in her cell after the Violator, and she has chosen to try and
seek forgiveness. And, as usual, Asuka is being a spoiled brat. While,
yes, it
I think being unhappy about having been raped does not make one a spoiled
brat.
***Refusing to accept the truth that neither one of them could really
control what happened, and refusing to accept that Rei is genuinely sorry
for that loss of control, is to me, being a spolied brat. Asuka is the last
one who should hold a grudge against someone for losing control considering
how often she's done just that. But she's attempting to hold Rei to a
higher standard than she holds herself. Had the situation been reversed,
you can bet she'd still try and find some way to blame it all on Rei,
because she "certainly couldn't be at fault" anymore than she has been in
the rest of the series. That's the way she's been most of the series, and
while she has grown up some, she's still the snobbish princess she was at
the start.
Don't get me wrong, I like Asuka, but I think she's being totally unfair to
Rei. Just like she has been to Touji.***
***Just the way I see it. And it's totally in character as you've
established them. I just hope she gets over it eventually, because I'm a
sucker for sappy endings. And having all of them realize who they really
love and being friends is the sappy-est ending I can think of***

The most preposterous motion that H. sapiens has ever dreamed up it that the
Lord God of Creation, Shaper and Ruler of all the Universes, wants the
saccharine adoration of His creatures, can be swayed by prayers, and becomes
petulant if He does not receive this flattery. Yet this absurd fantasy,
without a shred of evidence to bolster it, pays all the expenses of the
oldest, largest and least productive industry in all history.
