Well, this series won't end in 'everyone dies', but we're not promising
the happiest of endings either.

Of course not.  I'm betting Misato buys it at least, giving the Children the
added incentive of revenge on Cthulu, who whatever Gendo thinks, is likely
to be the strongest of them.  It's not the Cthulu Mythos for nothing.

I just hope Maya and Ritsuko, and the Children survive.  They're the nucleus
of the new humanity, and I think the human race will need all of them once
the old "gods" have been swept away.

That's just my hopes though.  Don't let it influence your plot if you have
different plans.
