	Here's a bit of commentary:

Firstly, be clear on what anime you're counting as Shoujo.
Escaflowne is not strictly shoujo. (It wasn't published as shoujo
manga, and the show is pretty ambiguous.) Love Hina is *definetly* not
shoujo. (Typically any show featuring one guy surrounded by dozens of
cute girls is not.)

Secondly, (and here I'm about to offend a bunch of people)
judging all shoujo anime by Sailor Moon and the "magical girl" genre is
kind of like judging all Shounen anime by Dragonball Z. (They're both
kind of similar, actually -- long, repetitive fights and nonsensical
plots.) My advice to people who automatically reject that sort of thing
is to watch something good: Saishuuheiki Kanojo tops my list at the
moment for nice, depressing shoujo anime.

passing-out
test for a novice. He is taken into a room full of all types of
clothing
and asked: "Yo, my son, which of these is the most stylish thing to
wear?"
And the correct answer is: "Hey, whatever I select."
