This is probably to the point where warning will be handed out by the admins, but I will comment anyway.
In houses older then 30 yrs, small wood boards(?? x 3" x 1/4") covered with about 1/4" to 1/3" of plaster was use instead of drywall. If you slam your back against it hard enough you will leave spiderweb-like cracks. Two other things should also be pointed out: one, construction standards in the U.S. are not necessarily the same as in Japan, and two the author is always right so if he wants to use drywall instead of plaster it is his decision.

Drywall? Unless my understanding of construction is off, drywall is
almost never left exposed, unles you're going for the 'unfinished' look.
I do know the effect you're describing, but the word you want escapes me
for the moment.
Your understanding of construction appears to be off. Drywall is the material that makes up interior walls--and the inside of exterior walls--in most houses in the US. It's simply nailed to studs and painted. Sometimes, especially in bathrooms or kitchens, wall paper or tile may be used instead of paint.
But . . . a spiderweb of cracks in drywall? That's all? I could break drywall without too much difficulty (at least before it's hung). Simply dropping a picture in such a fashion that a corner of the frame strikes the drywall will leave a noticable gouge. Granted, there's a stud every sixteen inches, and Ranma's shoulders are unlikely to fit between two of them. Still, if he really wanted to escape, I'd expect him to break down two of the studs and go straight through the wall. Though . . . I suppose that would require conscious effort directed at the top and bottom of the studs, of which he may not be capable while terrified.
